My dad owns a 3 flat apartment building and has owned it for many years now. He's a carpenter and bought the place as a "handyman special". It was a great deal for him and he does almost all the work on it. He retired last year and now he's got something to do for a few hours a week to get out of the house. He's almost always picked the right tenants and most have stayed a long time. They RV for a few months of the year now and we come by to help out. He also pays one of the tenants a couple hundred bucks while they're out of town to just upkeep by sweeping, mowing the lawn, etc. It works out very well and he's already paid the place off so its just income now. I know he's spent a lot of time to maintain it but I think he really likes it.
DH and I want to do it as well once the girls are older and we have more time on our hands.
