Holding positions for baby boys (I've only EC'ed with a girl!)

Hi Mamas!
I'm due in about 4 weeks with our first boy, and after having had a really successful experience with EC'ing our daughter, I'd like to do it again. My question is, how do you hold a baby boy while also managing to keep the penis pointing down into the potty (or on the ground, whatever). Seems like a mama needs three hands for this!

Thanks!

Hi! I started ec'ing my ds at 6.5 weeks ( he is now 8.5). I tried many techniques.. all were difficult.. until my friend gave me a baby bjorn! Finally something that worked! It works best if I set it on the counter in the cradle hold or if I hold it on my lap, slightly tipped back. Still, the penis wiggles and bounces and sometimes a little pee gets over the edge... not very often though
I also found that with boys, you can't just leave them lying on their back-- I always have to have something pulled up between the legs for protection.. newborn prefolds work great, as well as fuzzibunz inserts. I found directions on how to make my own babylegs- so made bunches of those to keep him warm while he is nakey. Works well! Last night I experimented with some footed pants, cut them up the middle for open crotch pants. Have not really tried them out, but will today!
Congrats on the baby!!!:
Good luck!

I started ECing with my DS at 5 weeks. With him, I sort of just got to know how far his stream would normally go and then position him or the receptacle accordingly. We held him in classic position in front of the toilet, and that was definitely enough room almost no matter how far it flew! I also held him in classic position while I was sitting on the floor with my legs tucked under my bum. His back resting on my back, his little booty resting on my thighs, and an old wipes box strategically placed between my legs so the stream would land in it. I don't know if I am explaining this well! This was one of my favorite holds though because we would sit in front of a floor length mirror and have a nice time while I waited for him to go.

Occasionally I would use a finger to point it down gently, but I preferred not to interrupt that way since it would stop his stream sometimes. But I know others have done this successfully.

For some reason, I only really needed to aim my son when he was really little. Maybe he fits the potty better now, or his proportions have changed or something. So, I don't do this anymore. But, I found that me aiming him with my finger would stop his stream if I tried it mid-stream, but if I put him in position, aimed him with my finger before he started going, and then just held really still, it didn't interrupt things. On the potty, I would just rest a finger on top of his penis, and without a potty, I held him in classic position with a hand under each thigh and a finger resting on top, again. Pretty easy, actually!

Congratulations on your new little one!

Yep, the Baby Bjorn Little Potty is great, he's never peed outside of it (the stream usually stops when he starts moving & getting agitated).

Also, when I use an old mixing bowl as a potty, I make sure to put his whole backside in, tilting it a little upwards in the front so that the urine stream will definitely be contained.

I used to hold him over the sink, and he only overshot the back 2 or 3 times. No biggie!

Just make sure the penis is pointing down in the beginning, as it can get sort of stuck in funny (maybe sideways) positions to the scrotum when they've been in a diaper, hihi.

(pardon the bumping of a massively old thread, lol... I was looking for another one that actually does not exist and found this one instead. )

Yep, the BBLP is great. My DS is 9 months now and we used that one a lot when he was younger (and DH still likes to use it). I'm trying to transition him now to the big toilet b/c I don't want to have to dump/clean the BBLP all the time when I can just flush the big potty, lol. And I do it w/o a seat adapter, too. I sort of set DS on there so that his calves are on the seat and his bottom is in the bowl and he's leaning forward so that his chest is touching his thighs. With that combo, there seems to be enough of an angle control there so that the stream goes where it's supposed to (i.e. not through the crack between the seat and the bowl, lol). Then if he happens to need to do a #2, he's all ready and in a good position for that, too.

I'm a first-timer (ec-er and mom) with a 4week old DS. We're doing full-time CD back-up so I usually use the bathroom sink as his potty (eventually I plan on getting a real potty but for now, being right next to a tap is awesome!). I don't know if it's just my DS but sometimes, even when his penis is pointing down, he can somehow pee at a 90degree angle! I hold him with his back against my belly and my hand holding each of his legs in a squatting position. I find it VERY easy to direct his stream with a finger and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I won't lie though, hardly an opportunity passes without pee either on one of his legs or my hands....one more reason for using the sink, i guess!

I like this position too because he often pees and poos at the same time, or the effort of pooing forces out some pee...regardless,he's in a good position and the sink's big enough to catch it all...

I've been struggling with this a little too. I sit DS (5 months) on the BBLP and try to tip him forward enough that he points down, because he definitely stops peeing if I madly try to poke his penis down mid-stream! I have learned to put a waterproof mat on the floor underneath the potty because we still get pee up and over the edge about 50% of the time... I was wondering if the BB Smart Potty is any better for this... but I doubt it...
