thrush +breath & urine smell like

apple juice? EBF, 16 weeks old today. She has not had anything other than bm. I noticed a super sweet apple-ish smell to her wet diapers yesterday. Today, her breath smells sweet & fruity and she's got classic yeast/thrush patches on her inner cheeks and lips.

I'll be doing gentian violet per Dr. Newman tonight, I want to see if I can figure out the smells- Does anyone have info? She's a chunky baby, happy, healthy, so I'm not really "worried" but seriously curious. Ok, the second round of thrush has me worried, bc I have no clue how it happened.

The ped's office is the place to go to get the flu, so we are trying to stay out.

ETA- actually, she's been really fussy (for her, not very fussy for most babies) for a couple days.

ETA again- She does not have MSUD.
Is it possible I'm consuming too much sugar and carbs and it's doing some weird blood-sugar mojo on the breastmilk? I have had too many white bread and white sugar products this week.

This is highly unlikely. BM is affected by what we eat, but I seriously doubt that you could increase the amount of sugar in your BM enough to make your LO's urine smell like apple juice. Although, yeast do thrive on sugar and white flour, so that could be part of your thrush problem

My concern would be that her urine is smelling more concetrated... you would want to check for dehydration in that case. I have also heard that people with diabetes who are having a sugar over-load have breath that smells fruity. I hope this isn't freaking you out! All that said, my DD's breath always a sweet smell to it. I think it's just the nature of the BFing baby (or toddler).

Thrush can be tenacious, so you have to treat it aggressively. DD and I had it for 3-4 mo. It was awful. I finally figured out that we were getting re-infected by a paci storage container at daycare that wasn't being disinfected. With thrush, you have to disinfect everything with boiling water and/or vinegar every day. This includes all bottles, pump parts, pacis, bras... basically anything that comes in contact with your LO's mouth, your BM, or your breasts. Here is Dr. Jack Newman's protocol. In addition to what he recommends I took tons of good-quality pro-biotics and cut all sugar and white flour and white rice out of my diet for a while. I also disinfected my bras daily by hand-washing them in hot water, detergent, and white vinegar and then let them dry in the hot sun.

Good luck with the thrush. It can be really frustrating to get rid of!

Fruity breath is a classic symptom of diabetes, as another poster said. Don't want to freak you out, but diabetics are prone to yeast infections, dehydration, and can also get cranky when blood sugar fluctuates. I'd get it checked, if I were you. That's nothing to mess around with.

Diabetics also pass sugar through the urine.

Yeah, I didn't think I could pass "extra" sugar through bm, but I've heard of stranger things.

Not freaked out at all- the first thought in my mind was diabetes when I smelled it. We have a WBV on the 25th (the office is basically closed for the flu right now, and won't see us unless they deem it "serious" ) and I will have her checked. She's not dehydrated at all, and she seems to be feeling better now... her pee still smells though.

I hate being a buttinsky and normally I don't do this...but I can't not say that maybe it's at least worth a call to your clinic to let them determine if they think it's serious enough to warrant a visit. I have a friend whose baby was diagnosed with Type 1 at a young age (15 months or something like that?) and it was very quick to come on and very serious - he was lucky to make it through. I also have a cousin who was diagnosed at age 15 years and he was also gravely ill, so maybe age has nothing to do with it at all. Things can go downhill very fast. It might be worth having it checked sooner than the 25th. Diabetes is probably very unlikely but given the fruity breath and pee, sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry.

I hope you find a simple explanation for it, and that your LO is feeling all better soon.
