i am in the process of creating a space for sewing and i'm wonder what sort of set up others have. i would especially love to see photos. i am also interested in how to organize all the little things. spools of thread and small notions. maybe i need a sewing basket. any recommendations for nice sewing baskets? i would post a photo of my current set up but it is am embarrassing disastrous mountain of clutter. eek

well my sewing area is a bit of a mess because everything seems to make its way onto it. My area is in the kitchen, so i guess that is bound to happen.

I want to get a wall mount spool rack. I bought one that goes on the shelf, but to my surprise it only fits small spools and not standard sizes. So if you get one of these, make sure that you can fit a standard spool on each pin.

I store notions in transparent glass jars, this helps me to see what i have. I also have an open basket that i can throw things into quickly, as well as a sewing basket with compartments, that one works well too. I find it a pain to open it up and dig through tho.

I have shelves, which really help, altho, i wish they were lower. I would say to utilize your walls best you can. The more table space you have, the better.

I hope this helps

I am a full time WAHM. I work out of 2 spare bedrooms that are adjacent to the living-room. File folder boxes help me keep my fabric and other supplies somewhat organized.

Mine is too messy - I don't even dare to show it on here . I live in a small place, so most of my fabrics are stuffed in the pantry, and some in the laundry room. I do have a special sewing table though, and the small stuff like pins, needles, elastic, zippers, buttons etc are in a box below it.

Right now my sewing space is the dining room table. I use a few baskets and a sewing basket to keep things in order. It's not a good solution, only temporary!

i no longer feel bad that i have a small messy cluttered space. apparently it is pretty common. i love the idea of using glass jars to store stuff. until this week i had been sewing without an ironing board : i still ironed i sort of had a make shift thing i did with old towels. anyhow i now have an ironing board! sadly i have no place to put much of a table in our office so i use the kitchen table or floor when i need to lay everything out. if i can find it within myself to get rid of enough stuff i may have space for a table in our office. thanks for all the feedback. if anyone has anymore it is welcome

I have a sewing/computer room.

My industrial machine is on one wall. To the left side, an Ikea drawer unit sits beside it, this has all my notions in it. The unit doesn't have a top so I can just reach in the upper drawer where all my needles, bobbins, screwdrivers and most used threads are kept. My serger sits on top of the industrial's desk, on the left. On the right, is my ironing board. It sits perpendicular to the machine, so I only have to stand up and turn to press. I have a plastic bin for patterns, another for fabric (and a couple of cardboard boxes). I'd like to get a nice big dresser to put the fabric in, that would be much better to look at.

I love browsing the flikr craft room pool for ideas

Mine is in a corner of my bedroom. The black file cabinet holds a lot of craft supplies: some fabric in the bottom drawer, in the top two drawers are pens, pencils, crayons, watercolors, scissors, tape, glue, etc.

Then you can pretty much see what is on the silver shelf: fabrics in the plastic bin (I need another bin. It's already full and I keep buying more fabric!) craft felt sheets in the basket, thread in a plastic box. On the top shelf, a cigar box holds my ribbon and one of the orange tins holds buttons and beads, and the other holds "poky things." (pins, needles, etc)

I do need a sewing basket of some kind though, because I like to do embroidery where ever I plop down, and I'm tired of hauling it all out every night. I've seen some cute ones with trendy fabrics at Walmart, but I'm hoping to run across one at a garage sale this summer.

My sewing things are all over the house, although my main sewing space is crammed in an odd corner of our office. With our house everything is common space, everything is mixed together, no one goes off to a room by themselves to do something, we can do all of our varied things in the same space.
My fabric is kept in the bottom of the kids' closet. It's not usually that messy in there, but I've been sewing a lot lately. My projects in progress, and other boxes of crafty things are kept on a high shelf in the kids playroom, and so is my chest of patterns.
I'm considering moving my machine and little shelf into the hallway, once I get rid of all the boxes cluttering it up. I just feel too hemmed in (HA!) in the little corner I'm in now. Once I do that, I want to get an ironing board, and a serger, maybe one day. :P

Oh man, a sewing space! Nice. Someday I will have something. For now I keep each project in it's own reusable grocery bag, and my shears and pincusion with whatever project I am currently working on. Scraps and patterns are in anther bag. I keep all of this in my closet, and when it's time to sew I clear the dining room table. Thank goodness for light sewing machines, eh? I don't store it, since it's my sister's she keeps it in her room.

Now if you're talking a proper sewing ROOM, my grandmother has a nice space. She keeps her fabrics in old dressers and plastic totes (she has a lot!) and she has a long folding banquet table that her straight stitch machine is on, and another smaller table with her serger. My grandfather made her a thread holder out of a smooth piece of lumber and he fixed small wooden pegs to it. He mounted it on the wall ove her serger. She also has overhead wire shelves for bolts of fabric. Notions are kept in rolling plastic bins (the ones with lots of little drawers). She has a case for her scissors, and she keeps a small sewing basket with her essentials (seam ripper, measuring tapes, 8" shears, marking paper and wheel, rotary cutter, etc.) and a magnetized pin cushion all on her straight stitch table. The far end of that table has a cutting mat on it and she uses it to piece quilt blocks and etc. In the other room she has the ironing board, extra fabric storage, and a large, high cutting table.

sigh, mine is like my dining room...becuase it is my dining room! I do have a rolling set of plastic drawers that I use to organize things. my mom has a spool holder over her door in her sewing room.

Oh, here's where I do sew small projects. (t's a corner of my bedroom too.

If I have bigger projects, I go to the dining room table. I have storage for fabrics and other supplies in a few different places (bedroom closet and a cabinet in the family room), but I don't have pictures of them and I want to re-organize things anyway, I hate having my stuff in two separate places.

Our formal dining room is my sewing room. Currently I keep my fabric in big plastic tubs, but I'd like to get some cupboards or shelves with doors to keep it all in. I would put them on shelves now, but the room gets a lot of sunlight and I don't want the fabric to fade. It's nice and bright and cheery in there though!

I also do the clear glass jars for notions. I frequent thrift shops, and have found here and there unique glass jars to hold my different things. Each jar is different. My favorite is the one I have my pins in. The bottom is only about 1" tall, but about 4" wide and round. The lid is about 5" tall and when they are together it looks like a clear Hershey's Kiss. I love it! I'll have to take a picture of it, but my camera battery is dead at the moment. lol Best thing was, it was only $.59!

I'm still in the process of getting my sewing room set up the way I like it. I used to just sew at the kitchen table and keep my fabric in the basement. It is nice not having to run up and down the stairs when I'm looking for fabric.

I have 2 large fold-up tables joined together in the livingroom as my sewing room. It's an absolute mess though, as all kinds of stuff finds its way on the table.

I need some storage boxes/jars or something to keep it organized.

How you you all store your thread? Mine always ends up in a tangled up mess.

I currently have something similar to this http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.j...PRODID=prd1045 but I'm running out of room. I put the bobbin under the spool of thread so they stay together.

I would like to get a couple of these http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.j...RODID=prd17776

DH made me this thread rack for Christmas last year. I keep my threaded bobbins in the covered bobbin boxes they sell on the notions wall at Jo-Ann's.

In theory, this is my sewing room:

In reality, it only looks like that after I clean it up I keep active projects in a wicker basket, organise my fabrics into Rubbermaid totes with lids and keep notions and other small items in plastic three drawer containers. But when I'm actually sewing, things tend to be scattered around the table, stacked up and tossed around. I work best in a small amount of chaos.

If your threads are getting tangled you can use a small piece of tape to hold the loose tails to the spools. It doesn't hurt the thread and it keeps the tails from tangling in each other.

Tape! Why did I not think of that ?

I did go through & clean it all out today! I can see the tables! It looks really nice! Maybe I can sew something now ?
