Thinking of a move from GA to VT....Need Info!

Hi -
We are considering a move up to Vermont from Atlanta in about a year. My husband is planning to retire at that point, and I have the "move card" so to speak! : I have been researching the Burlington area for about 2 years now, as it really appeals to the holistic/green living that we have moved into over the past three years. Our son, who is 5, is almost recovered from what was diagnosed as severe autism via alternative medicine, homeopathy, therapies, enzymes, etc and by a mom who "never gives up!" He presents more like ADHD now (hyper, etc). He has always been like a "bubble boy" suffering from what I always thought was MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) just from being around perfumes, laundry detergent, cleaning products, etc.

So, for those who live in Vermont, I would love to get some insight. I actually have not been up there yet (very hard to travel in the past years....we are planning a trip in April) but from everything I have read it seems to be a great fit for our family. My understanding is that burlington is very enviromentally aware, doesn't use pesticides in parks/public areas, etc. Neither do the schools. Georgia is so polluted, and everyone uses pesticides/chemlawn. It is so frustrating, being exposed to all the heavy metals and chemicals all the time. We need CLEAN AIR, and I am hoping that Vermont is as clean as I hear. Am I right? I do know that it is COLD there, and that is really our main concern. : What about that IBM plant in Essex...is it still polluting lake champlain? There really isn't the awareness here in GA unfortunately. We are also looking at vermont b/c of the philosophical vaccine exemptions. We will NEVER do another vaccine, as it is what caused my son's autism (we lost him to full blown autism within a week of receiving 7 shots in one day at 14 months old).

I would love to know about resources too, as I worry about having what we would need there. Does anyone know of good holisitic pediatricians, and classical homeopaths in the area?

How about schools? I have been checking out the Renaissance, Waldorf, and Bellwether schools that seem good. Do you know if they are open to kids that have some special issues and do they currently have kids on the spectrum there? Are they "green?"

How about organic shopping and resources? Is organic food readily available there, and if so, where? We have Whole Foods down here...

In general, what is the mindset of parents up there regarding holisitic living? How many don't vaccinate, and are there issues in schools when you choose this route?

Are there chemlawn and pesticide trucks running around up there a lot, or do people choose other greener routes? Are there companies that do that there, or what do people do?

thanks so much for any info!!!!

I don't have time to answer all of your questions, but I think you'll find what you're looking for in Burlington. However it does get really cold here. We had a few weeks where it was so cold (-teens) I could not take DD out for any more that running to a warmed up car.

Hi,

I can't respond to all of your inquiries about Burlington, Vt, but I can speak to a few of them. For starters, I don't actually live in Burlington, but about 24miles north of Burlington. However we go there often and it is where my partner works.

Regarding organic foods...we don't have anything like Whole Foods, however there are two great natural food stores in the Burlington area, each with lots or organic goods. In addition, during the growing season, there are LOTS of farmers markets, farm stands, etc.

We have choosen to delay and limit vaccinating our children and have found a wonderful pediatrician who supports our decision. He isn't necessarily a "holistic" doctor, but he's been great and I feel very comfortable with him.

Oh, yes, and the winters...they are long and cold. I think, even more so with young children. As a previous poster mentioned, we had a stretch when the temps didn't get much above zero and it was hard.

But, the summers are great and I love living and raising my family in Vermont.

Just a few quick answers. I don't think I've EVER seen a Chemlawn truck or anything like it anywhere in Vermont. People just don't "do" lawns like that around here, or if they do they must achieve it some other way.

I'm sure you can find likeminded folks in Burlington. It is expensive in Burlington (which is the reason I don't live there) so check out the rents and home prices carefully either online or when you visit.

If you do a search in this tribe you will surely find suggested docs to work with. There are a lot more alternative medicine practitioners around now even than 10 years ago.

We have never had a problem with schools in VT with the philosophical exemption. Had to fill out one form for each kid, once, at the preschool level and it has never been brought up again.

Here is one practice to check out. We have used them in the past. Shelburne is just to the south of Burlington.

Thanks so much for all the great replies. I really appreciate it. I am planning to visit in April with my 3yr old daughter to check things out! I think we will stay in Burlington most likely. I have also scheduled visits with Renaissance and Bellwether schools - does anyone have any scoop on either of those? How about the waldorf school in shelburne? I will also check out that clinic you mentioned in shelburne....sounds right up my alley! :-)

Yes, I really like both the Shelburne and Williston areas....very nice.
Any recommendations for things to do while we are in town? It will be early April, so I assume it will still be cold there? :

Hi Valerie,

I would recommend checking out Shelburne Farms while you're in Vermont, especially since you may be in the area of Shelburne. It's a wonderful place particularly in the spring. It's great for kids. There will be baby lambs and maple sugaring for sure. Check out there website for directions and other possible activities.

Hi!
I also don't have time to respond to everything...but I would absolutely check out the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Shelburne if you are looking into holistic/green/awesome education! And I second the visit to Shelburne Farms...good idea. You may also want to look into the Central Vermont area (Montpelier)...great community, nice food co-op, great playgroups, etc. Also good schools (public schools are well-liked, and there is another great Waldorf School called Orchard Valley Waldorf School, and yet another private school called River Rock School. There are probably others as well (particularly for younger grades...I know there is a Montesori school but I am not sure how far up the grades go??!!)

Sounds like this area has a lot of what you are looking for...but the cold temps can be a big adjustment. I grew up here but lived in Cali and Hawaii for a few years and coming back was harder than I thought. But there are things to do to pass the time in the Winter...and getting outside with appropriate warmies and gear makes the winter much more bearable.

Good Luck!!!
