Whooping Cough in Schools

This makes me mad! Why do they feel the need to report that several kids have a cold!

Because Whooping cough is NOT a cold

A cold is viral infection that needs no antibiotic treatment

Whooping cough needs an antibiotic and isolations so children at high risk can be protected. If a student is at the school who has a weakend amun system that could make this ESTREALLY dangerous to them, then they need to be protected.

Yes many who get Whooping cough recover with no issue, however it has more instances of a sevear reaction then the common cold.

I want to add too that my girls don't have that Vaccine because I have an allergy to something in it so we're waiting. However I am VERY careful about making sure if they're sick they stay home. They both go to daycare, because I work. If my kids were to get Whooping cough and pass it to one of the babies who is to young for the vaccine I would never forgive myself.

While I agree that WC is more serious than the common cold, antibiotics do nothing to help a child with WC and many studies show, along with moms with personal experience that antibiotics do more harm than good in a case of WC.

I think most antibiotics are worthless because by the time it is clear the child has WC, it's too late for them to be effective, correct? they are only afective very early on?

In that case, I propose a program of giving antibiotics to all children as a preventative measure. We can add it to school milk.

I second that one. I also think it would be wise to go ahead and give the rabies vaccines to all kids, you know, just in case!

How about we just insert all children into bubbles, at birth and plan on keeping them there throughout life? Life is dangerous. Being alive inevitably results in death...

I'm actually doing a bit of self experimentation to answer this point. Early results indicate that this long held view is in fact false.

Shuttit,
Just you wait. I'll be proven correct in the end. I guarantee it.

My daughter still breastfeeds and gets probiotics that I take and well as her own! I think this is a better defense against it than the vax or antibiotics! I hate that people think the antibiotics and antibacterial cleaners will keep us healthy!

BF babies can get these things too. People who rely solely on BF make me worried. I am a BF and I STILL make sure my girls are safe. They can still get all these nasty things.

Comparing a vax for Whooping Cough and Rabies is so far out there. Rabies is trasmitted by a bite from an infected animal. Whooping cough is airborn.

That would be correct

Plus, from what I recall, it's the toxin produced by the bacteria, not the bacteria themselves, that contributes to the cough. So, the antibiotics don't do anything to combat the toxin.

I BF and certainly don't think that it means my child is not capable of coming down with something. Do I think it lessens his chances because it boosts the immune system? Absolutley. And I still make sure he is safe by doing a host of other things that do not include vaccination. If you think vaccinations make your child "safe" from getting VPD's then that's fine I guess, although it is a fact that vaxed kids come down with various VPD quite often (escpecially WC)

And as for comparing rabies to WC...the poster was being sarcastic.

The part about the kids having to take abx before returning to school would bother me... especially when many of us question the benefits of abx in WC and know the risks.

Can't the child just stay home during the period where they are contagious? That is what they do for illnesses like chickenpox.

Yes they would just have to stay home until the outbreak was over which might be a while. Since they think abx prevents transmission, they load them up with abx and then they can go back to school. I would just keep my LO home however long that might be.(get the abx rx filled to keep them off my back but i wouldn't use them.)

I notice that they fail to mention the childrens' vaccination status...
