What's a backward loop?

Hi there,

I'm knitting the 5 hour baby sweater, and I have no clue about what the pattern means- it says M1 means make a backward loop and place on the right hand needle. What? What exactly is that.... never heard of it before? When I get to the point in the pattern, it says you will be placing markers so I thought maybe M1 meant place marker, which is usually pm, but then it says pm in the same row as it says M1.

So, can someone tell me what a backward loop is?

M1 usually means "make one" or "increase by one." Check out over here (very helpful site, btw---this is where I learned to knit): http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases

It's like a half hitch cast on. You just loop the yarn over your thumb, and slide it onto the needle.

You can also ignore that, place your marker, and when you come back on the next row, pick up the yarn between two stitches, twist, and knit it.
