Separating glass shards from coconut oil? - Page 3

This seems more like a family safety issue than a frugality one. I would toss it in a heartbeat. My kids' health is worth more than a jar of coconut oil. Sorry this happened!

lol, ok... I waited long enough and after sleeping on it, the first thing I did was toss it so I couldn't change my mind AGAIN. Dh even said, "if the glass is fine enough, wouldn't it just be like swallowing sand?" I knew for sure then that it probably needed to go in the garbage, because all I could think of was millions of tiny, razor sharp shards of "sand".

32 oz. of the finest, most luxurious C.O. available.... gone.

I guess it's better safe than sorry. I MIGHT be able to get the postal insurance to pay for it. It just seems like more a PITA than actually trying to strain shards of glass out of it, iykwim. :
It was actually packed quite well, but one whole corner was caved in... like it was intentionally dropped on a corner. :
But in the garbage it went.

I'm glad I ordered two.

That would be frustrating, but I'm glad you did it.

On the upside, it probably wouldn't have killed anyone:
Snopes of Ground Glass as Poison
But still, there are some pretty unpleasant things that could happen.

Oh, good. I'm glad you tossed it.

It sucks, though. I hope that they will replace it for you.

I eat crap off the ground. I think my daughter gets half her nutrition from food she finds on the floor around her high chair after meal times. I do draw the line at eating tiny bits of glass, though.

Dh calls this behavior, "hunting and gathering" and dd#3 gets VERY upset when you fish out the rightfully gathered morsels from her mouth.

Could be RIGHT AFTER mealtime too... apparently a full tummy means nothing when it comes to hunting and gathering.

I'm glad you tossed it OP.

OMG, having read that very article I had every intention of posting it after I read through this thread. You beat me to it, Annettemarie! I love snopes!

I'm normally a very frugal person, however...this is different in my opinion. I've dropped a few things in the past, and I am always amazed how far the broken glass goes. I also agree that the glass could have broken into small peices. Don't risk your families health over this one broken jar.

Frugality starts with common sense.

I think that you did the right thing. I would toss it too.

I love all the "OMG! Eating shards of broken glass!". Like it would be that way. I'm fine with you throwing it away, above all you just follow your gut feeling, and you did. I was one vote for straining, *not* one vote for feeding my family shards of glass. Or sands of glass. I would have shaved the outside. Maybe even a 1/2". Also, I would have cut that bottom corner you mentioned completely off. Then I would have warmed and strained, through something very fine, like a coffee filter. Then I would have evaluated my final product, and made a decision based on how I felt about it *now*. If I felt good, fine, if I felt weird, bye-bye money. I'm just : at all the "A trip to the ER from eating shards of glass! OMGz!" posts.

Well, because I oviously find it hilarious when people are in pain from internal lacerations?

Seriously, that the OP would have allowed it to happen. That she would have just started cooking with the stuff, without a fair post-straining evaluation. That there would be "shards" of glass, or even "sands" of glass that would make it through a mother's radar, and her family would end up in the ER. And that those of us who would have given straining a shot, before making out final decision were somehow down with the idea of people ending up in the ER from this, or worse ignorant to the fact, or worse ok with it, because we're just tightwads like that. That's what's funny.

I guess you've never seen how tiny glass shards can be. I used to do glass work, and when I'd clean out the grinder, I'd have it full of these super-fine sand particles. There were so fine that I couldn't pick up just one grain, even with tweezers. Unless you have a very fine strainer, they'd go right through and stay in your food.

If you think that's fine for your family, go right ahead. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The point being that you might be unable to see the shards or grains of glass and "unknowingly" give your family food that has glass in it.

Tropical Traditions and Green Pastures have gallon size "buckets/jars" of CO that are plastic and not glass.

You could then melt it and put it in your own mason jars.
