Trying to find the right inserts for my heavy wetter- FBs

My 14 mo old heavy wetting DS is in Med FBs with a microfiber terry insert and it's just not enough. I started doubling with some microfiber doublers that are thinner than inserts and its not enough either.

So, I bought some Thirsties hemp inserts.

If I use the micro insert & the hemp together the diaper is massive and his pants dont fit. Is the hemp insert made to be used alone? Im worried that it wont be enough by itself but if I double up on anything he has a giant rear. I even tried with success (no leaks) a mirco or hemp insert with a prefold but its still abnormally puffy. I just cant imagine that its comfy either.

What should I do? I need super absorbency but something relatively thin too. Is that possible?

Thanks ladies..

We have some super-do inserts for night time for DS... they were designed for heavy wetters and work pretty well. If you need a TON of absorbency though it is bound to be bulkier.

Working with what you already have, you might try one of your hemp inserts paired with the microfiber doubler that you have. The problem with hemp alone is that it doesn't absorb fast enough sometimes, so you want the microfiber terry on top to do the fast absorbing and then the hemp will soak it up from there.

I was just about to say we do this now but you're actually suggesting we use the thin micro terry doubler - not the insert that is thicker - right? Will the mirco doubler pull the wetness away from him and into the hemp? What happens when the micro doubler is fully wet? Will he become rashy.. he tends to get rashy if any wetness stays near him for even short periods of time.

I am willing to purchase other inserts that might work better too.

And Cheley - Where did you get your super-do inserts from? Why do you only use them at night?

We got ours from abbyslane.com and we only use them at night because he only needs that much absorbency at night. That might change as he gets older though!!

At night, we stuff DS up until he fits the phrase "baby's got back"

My fave is 2 hemp's because we try to stick with natural fibers.

During the day I just stuff less and change more.

We've always gotten by with just 1 regular microfiber insert during the daytime. But at night we usually do 2 of the thick, standard microfiber inserts that come with the fuzzi bunz. They've always worked for us at keeping kids dry for 12+ hours.

My fav inserts are the Loopydoos.

But i second what the pp said and use the hemp inserts with a microfiber doubler, or 2 hemp inserts.

We also use a combo insert at night (really long and you fold it to the length you want), or 2 microfiber with one hemp...sometimes one and one depending on how much ds has had to drink before bed! Even for daytime, we have to have 2 mf inserts. Just one does not last long at all.

These ladies have some wonderful suggestions! I would also suggest trying joey bunz inserts (they are hemp) these are INCREDIBLY thin! They are (i think) 6 layers of hemp and I can stack three of these to equal one microfiber insert

Thank you guys sooo much. Im going to look into some of these other inserts mentioned and play around with the combos.

Does it matter with the hemp and mf which is closer to the skin? I assume you want mf closer to baby with the hemp behind it, right?

As far as night time stuffing, we havent even gotten there because he leaks all day long. Once we can go without leaking during the day, Ill tackle the night issues. Im sure some ideas here will help.

Thank you again!

If he is leaking during the day i would check and make sure your not having repel issues. Pout a little bit of water on the inside of the diaper and see if its absorbed or if the water droplets roll off. If they roll of, you have repeling problems, and need to strip your diapers. Also be sure to change the diapers about every hour or every time your lo wets.

I'm fairly sure its not a repel issue. However, after leaking through 3 diapers tonight alone (after bedtime) I'm stripping yet again. I just stripped these too. DH & I love CDing (have been since day 1) but I think were both so tired of the leaks since he turned 10 mos and the rashiness caused by it.

I have invested a lot in my FB stash. I find myself turning to sposies when Im just sick of it.. I hate that too.

There used to be Joey Bunz (or similar) inserts that were hemp, but with one size faced in fleece. Awesome! Look for those -- they were my night time standby.

I will say that after my DD got to be a bit older, I went to disposables for night, though. Just too important to me to sleep through the night myself without having to change her, the bed, etc. We co-slept (still do) so there was a lot of self-interest at play too! Everyone finds their own system that is viable long-term; I never did disposables except at night, but after a time, that worked best for us.
