Henna or Hair Dye? My lackluster hair needs help.

I used to use permanent hair dye. Then I switched to Henna (from Henna for hair). Last time I got my hair cut, the hairdresser got me thinking about switching to a semi-permanent and the reason I'm considerring it is because my hair looks dull (or matte in her words) and flat. I've heard you can't dye over henna but the hairdresser said she can use a shampoo to chelate (?) the henna out. Has anyone felt that Henna did this to their hair? Has anyone switched back? She seems to think the semi-permanent hair dye will make my hair shinier but I'm wary (although apperently vain enough) to going back to the chemical route. Any advice opinions for either side greatly appreciated! I do have a few greys but not many also.

How often do you renew the henna? I find that a treatment every six weeks keeps it shiny, but if I go for a few months it tends to matte out.

Have you tried a protien wash on your hair? Somethingn like eggwhites (make sure you rince in cold water!)?

I use henna and I think its much better than any dye I have ever used, I would recommend a gloss treatment with it once a month to keep it shiny and to help hide roots, but im not a professional or anything, but that's what i try to do to keep it healthy. Good luck!
