I'd be up for meeting for coffee etc sometime. We're moving to Calhoun/Isles and renting a lovely condo there that I can't wait to be settled into. My husband's planning on doing worm composting inside--any of you off the grid/farmer folk done that and have tips?

Not me, but my best friend does that in her basement (right here in S. Mpls.).... And she's quite the evangelist about it. I can ask her for tips. Anything specific you'd like to know?

I HAVE INDOOR WORMIES!!!: They are super easy to keep, and a great way to offset food costs if do a veggi garden and use the super ferile top soil.

1. get a big rubbermaid container and drill small holes along the sides and bottom. leave the top off and put it underneath.

2. buy wormies! you can get them online, they are really cheap

3. add soil, water and organic matter. I used newspaper, leftovers, and plant trimmings

do not give them onions, coffee, or teabags! Loik into the garden forum, theres more info there than the off grid living.

And I am SO EXCITED for spring! I'm doing that Minnesota thing where since it's above 40 today we've got everyone in short sleeves and all the windows open to finally get some air in the house after the whole stuffy winter.

I did the same thing today. I even wore sandals when I had to drive into town this morning. In my book, above freezing = sandal weather.

I too am all about the sandals and barefeet as soon as the snow starts to melt- But our backyard is all mud and Being bigger than a house at this moment can't reach my feet to clean them off when i come in so still wear real shoes (slip ons). My girls were real sweet on Fri thou and made a bridge to cross the river of mud, out of scraps of wood we have in the yard- left over DH and ex have from the tree house they made for the dc last summer.

Soooo can't wait to get out and start the garden(s). We live in a rental but the land lord is ok w/anything we do (anything would be an inprovement) as long as he doesn't have to pay anything. We haven't had a garden here before and are planning on raised beds (3) and large planters for some things. Any ideas on where to get free dirt and/or compost?

I'm a SAHM right now but usually I work part time as a server. Yes I actually really enjoy the job. The only thing I'd love to do more is have a in home daycare- but that's a someday else dream.

This lo is the 1st for me that won't be born in fall or winter.I have a virgo, libra (like myself), a scorp, and 2 sags. He probably will be a Aries but there is still a possibility he could be a Pisces. We've looked into things that make it fun to guess when he'll be born and think sometime between March 20th and the 31st!

Anyone else STILL dealing w/illness? It seems like someone in this family has been sick since New Years. I'm going to try to air the house out today and tomarrow see if that helps. Dh think he may be getting phenmonia (sp) NOT good so soon to lo.

The city of Minneapolis frequently does this. I can't remember where/how they announce it, but naturally the website would be a good place to start.

Us. We've had nonstop round-robin illness ever since Xmas day. We've had a lovely parade of strep throat, sinus infections, tummy bugs, colds, you-name-it. DS is currently recovering from his 3rd bout of strep throat this school year! Amen to throwing the windows open. We did that all day yesterday. More today.

I think Naturalmamaof1 covered the basics nicely. That sounds pretty doable after all--I was envisioning more mess and more work. :P

As for work, I'm an L and D nurse at Methodist Hospital--sometimes I see great things, sometimes I see things that make my gnash my teeth, but overall I love doing birth work.

I'm super busy this week geez! Monday our Neighborhood freind is coming over for me to watch, then ds1 starts preschool, then Tuesday I have a well check up for ds2, then Wed. Neighborhood friend again, then Thursday a birthday party, then Friday I'm going to see a different chicken coop set up. Maybe I can sneak away for a mama meetup. . .

Anyone wanna meet for coffee at the Riverview (Longfellow, Mpls, on the corner of 42nd and 38th) They have a great great kid area, it's super kid friendly! We all should get out and meet up and enjoy the weather! :

We live in St Anthony Village (the town not the neighborhood) and I am SO SICK of being stuck in the house!

W. is 18 months and he is making me pull my hair out. So today we chucked him out in the back yard, which is 1 giant mud puddle.

Fairymom: re raised beds. We put in this gorgeous raised bed garden, but it was a HUGE amount of work. So not worth it. If we were to do it again we would skip it and just do a regular veggie garden. We used 2x12's and it was expensive!

I work at 3M as an engineer. It is kind of. Oh well, pays the bills.

Hi Mama's I'm Summer (the one Sam was talking 'bout in an earlier post!)
I too have an almost 3yo and a 3mo at home! Both girls...so we've got a house in Longfellow (mpls) that's full of estrogen trying to keep the drama to a minimum tho
I work as a prenatal yoga teacher around the TC...Blooma, Yoga Center of Mpls, North Memorial hospital...
I'm also known as the "sling lady" by many in the neighborhood as I've always got the littlest one attached to me via some sort of baby carrier

I'd love to chat and get to know y'all!
Friday am works for me...9am or after 11am

Sorry ladies I'll have to miss it this time- have a MW appt at 11! 36 wks! So excited!

Suzylee- we are planning to do raised veg garden. Don't want to use too much of the dirt in our backyard (think it may not be good for vegs we plan to eat!) as it is so icky and had cars and such parked on it for years before we moved in. Not doing big beds either- just about 12-18 inches high. My mom is really experienced w/gardening and raised beds so she wants to help too.

Had dinner last night at her house and she's looking into getting chickens! I really excited for her. Anyone know about codes and such in Coon Rapids?

I am also doing raised beds. North Minneapolis actually has really really dirth though, I'm not sure where you lived andd what the ars may have done to your soil, BUT, North minneapolis used to be a swamp, and a lot of the nieghborhood was partially underwater in the ealry 1900's so because of that the soils has become incredably rich in organic matter. I used to live on 35th and Lyndale (ouch, this was our 1st house and a really big mistake if you've driven by that part of the hood) anyway, I had a veggie garden and it grew huge and was super yummy: Anyway now here in Longfellow, my part of the hood actually has dangerous soil, the exact spot Target is on (on lake) was a pestiside plant in the 50's and there was major blowover and most of the soil around the nearby yards is still contaminated today sooooo raised beds it is. You an find local black dirt if search craig's list, also search for chicken manure, horse manure, ow manure usually it's free (do go look t the quality of the poop, often these animals graze on weeds so look to make sure it's partially decomposing, or else you maybe putting weeds in your garden!) He he ehe anyway, yeah gardening season is coming up!!!!

Anyway, anyone else want to meet up on Fri?? Summer and I frequent that coffee shop way too much, we need some fresh faces!

Anyone here getting a CSA? Which one's if any?

It's a busy week here -- trying to catch up on my work after endless family illnesses. If I do come I'll be kidless (both will be at school). So I'll have two extra hands to help with others' kiddies.
