Do you tip delivery men? - Page 2

It never even occured to me to tip for large deliveries. I feel bad now because we had a ton of furniture delivered a year ago and I didn't tip for any of it. I'll have to remember that for the future.

Exactly. I'm a little right now because it seriously never occurred to me. We had a whole living room group delivered - couch, loveseat, armchair, coffee table and end tables delivered a few years back and I never thought to tip. The guys were very careful, and arranged everything just so.

That might explain why they kind of stood there and looked at us when they finished, as we thanked them. :

I have never had anything delivered that had to go in the house...but recently had my wireless put in at my new house, and tipped him $15. whenever I have the money, I tip. even if its just a few dollars for a cup of coffee.

I tip movers because its an all day job - we're military and move a lot. I usually tip $10 per mover and also provide drinks and pizza.

I don't tip delivery men, but our place is very easy to get in and out of, all one story, etc. We've had several furniture deliveries recently and they were all like 10 minute jobs so I don't really feel the need to tip. If we had stairs or if the item was especially difficult to get in I probably would tip something.

Ive never tipped either except for food. With movers when we moved to Okinawa, they were sloppy and rude so it never crossed my mind (glad I didn't too because we ended up with a LOT of broken items from bad packing).
I never bought furniture new. The one appliance we bought new was out here and tipping isn't allowed over here (except for food purchases onbase).

True, but IME it's only the take-out counters with "curbside service" that do this.

I work at a chain restaurant (Cheesecake Factory) and we do take-out....even HUGE take-out orders for catering purposes, but you have to come in and pick it up.

We don't have a counter solely for takeout....the food is ordered by and picked up at the bakery, and the process of getting it all put together is a joint effort between the food runners and the bakery workers. The bakery workers are paid a real wage; if there are ever any tips on takeout, the food runners never see it. And they're the ones doing most of the legwork.

Years ago, I worked at an Applebee's and we had a counter solely for takeout. I think the to-go person got something like $5-6 hour, and the rest was made up of tips.

At small, independently owned restaurants, takeout is often done by the waitstaff, who have to take time away from their busy sections to take your order and get it together. It can be particularly annoying when someone calls and says "can you tell me what's on your menu?" Sure, it's Saturday night and I have 20 people to wait on right now, but I can read you the whole men over the phone. Then they order something stupid like a salad, ask for tedious things like parmesan "on the side", croutons "on the side," and "extra bread and olive oil." And they come in to pick up their order and don't tip a dime. Grrrr.

I tip for food delivery as I know they hardly get paid (tipped really well when gas prices went up!) but not furniture or appliance deliverys. I did force the really nice road crew who removed the dead deer from behind the fence at the back of my yard. They each got $20. I think they deserved more!

The only thing I ever get delivered is food, and I always tip for that.

Although, I have to say the last time we got a pizza delivered to our house (which we hardly ever do anymore now that we live in the 'burbs instead of the city), it was for the sitter. We left her a twenty and she ordered something that was maybe ten bucks.

The kid that delivered the food told her he didn't have change so she didn't know what to do and gave him the whole twenty!!!

I've probably had hundreds (if not thousands! ) of pizzas delivered in my life and I've never heard that line before. You can bet your butt I went over to the pizza place the next day and told the owner -- I was pissed!

That's how I felt-- except the part about needing to remember it for the future-- a year or two after our wedding when I learned most ministers receive a tip in addition to their fee for wedding services.

no. It cost me $100 to have my one chair delivered from Macys. I am expected to tip on top of that. No thanks. Charge less, than I will tip.

They may, but honestly how is the Lowes manager gonna know if you tip the guy while he's at your house? lol

The only "tippable" delivery I got was a butcher block counter from Ikea, thing weighed 120lbs and was 9ft long and over 2ft wide - the shipping company only sent one guy to deliver it. I didn't help him and DH was asleep - oops. lol
However both the shipping company and the driver couldn't find my house, even printed the wrong address on the invoice - so I was not in the mood for tipping. :

You're right...I didn't expect the men to turn it down. I sort of expected my husband not to offer! (Especially since he always helps the guys.)

nope. I am usually already paying for white glove service, so no. Lets see a new bed from Restoration Hardware, I am pretty sure the delivery was $250 so would you tip on top of that? They are making me pay that, they dont offer anything else. I have to save for that. Last normal place was Macy's and it was $100 to deliver a chair. If delivery was cheaper tipping would be great.

I do tip the pizza delivery man and we even tip at sonic.

We really don't have much furniture (or other large items) delivered but I don't think we have ever tipped before. We had a moving company move the heavy stuff a few years ago and I am pretty sure DH tipped them and we do tip pizza delivery (even with the "delivery fee" that is already tacked onto the order).

Not if I pay a delivery fee. The last time I had furniture delivered - two couches - the guy actually asked for a tip. I said sorry your cousin (was a family business) took all my money already. I was really shocked that he opened his palm and asked. So NO, not unless they deserve it.
