Urban & Small Space Gardens 2009 - Container, Balcony, Patio, Indoors - Page 8

I have spaghetti and butternut squash in, just has to get bigger and ripen. All of my tomato plants have some tomatoes on them, though the cherry varieties have the most of course. My watermelon and cantelope have flowers but haven't done anything really, perhaps they never will. It was an experiment. My bush beans are loaded with beans.

Oh, and remarkably, my corn actually has corn growing. I wasn't sure if it would because it's a row crop and all. There is one stalk that has no corn on it, but the other three do.

Ok, the lanscaping people for the housing complex I live in made me move my garden. Waaah. I liked it better where it was but apparently it was blocking a sprinkler (which, btw, was not working very well as it was but they want to fix the issue now). I think the new location won't get as much sun either :/ And found out there's no way I'm allowed to till up the ground in that spot for future in ground gardens because the tall plants would still block the sprinklers.

Say a prayer everything lives in it's new home. *sigh* I so wish I lived in a house where I could have a real, massive, in ground garden. I want lush 6' tall tomato plants too! I want an army of squash plants so thick you can't tell which is which anymore.

I totally wish I had a somewhat sunny windowsill to do a kitchen window herb garden The only suitable windows would be the boys room as the others are under verandas and get NO sun whatsoever. I think I'm going to try to get a couple of capsicum (pepper) plants for my vacant pots today, and I have some herb garden space so I may try to pick up some thyme and something else to fill those up. Nothing is prettier to me than a herb garden tumbling out of it's pots (my planters are almost like strawberry pots but not quite)

Talula.. bummer that you had to move everything again! Will it at least get more sun than it did in the backyard spot?? Hopefully it's enough to give it a shot at least!

Yes, it gets way more sun than the backyard, which got zero direct sun, I *think* it will get a bit less sun than it was getting? But oh well. Nothing I can do about it. The land my garden is on is technically not just mine, it's 'communal' because it's outside the front of my house. I guess I am lucky they were so accommodating. They could have forced me to put them back into my backyard.

That's very true! Here's crossing fingers that everything does fairly well despite the move

Woot! I have invaded the garden centre and picked up two capsicum plants that are supposed to be 'patio' varieties, a 4pack of black beauty zucchini, a garlic chives, purple basil, varegated thyme and a 6pk of green beans. All planted and happy, hopefully. I found 'tomato mesh' to make cages to go around my tomato pots, but it'll have to wait another fortnight till I have the $$.

Just thought I'd update, capsicum now have itty fruit on them, beans plants growing well, black zucchini have all got fruit on them about thumb sized..they'll be huge in a week lol, all is going well in my springtime garden : Haven't caged 'maters yet... as I gave up hope of the ones I had.. I think they had blight, so I yanked them. I have cherry tomoats instead now... NOT in the same soil as the old ones of course!

Since I am only doing tomatoes this year and the nasty super dry to super wet cycle & really cool nights way too early around here.... I am glad I didn't go all out this year. So just planning for next year and enjoying everyone else's gardens vicariously.

Indigo, definitely seems to have been a weird gardening year for y'all over ther this year!

I direct seeded some yellow button squash, anahiem chillies mmm, and little finger carrots yesterday... plus we added another dozen corn seeds into ds5's little corn patch

I finally have a yard! I just built raised beds in my yard and don't know what to do with my container garden. Should I just toss the dirt in the raised beds or compost it? Some were full of failed tomato plants and peas, etc.

Does anyone know if I can just uproot my strawberries and blueberries now and put them in the ground or should I wait until spring? I have nowhere for the container garden that gets sunlight right now, so they need uprooted and can't stay in the containers.

Bump... I'll be starting a 2010 thread soon. But thought I'd give this one a bump for the resources in post 1.
