Hemp Soakers-- How Hard?

Thread Starter
I need some hemp soakers (2 layers hemp fleece in a square shape). I'm trying to decide if it would be better to just buy them or sew them myself when figuring out cost/time. I'm VERY much a beginner when it comes to sewing (but attempting a Waldorf doll kit at the moment, ha, ha). I do have access to and help with a sewing machine. My main question is:
How hard is it to cut/sew hemp fleece since it is stretchy?

Any tips or recommendations on sewing or buying these soakers pre-made?

TIA!!!!

They are quite easy to make. Hemp requires a sharp scissors, but otherwise I found it easy to work with. I serged mine, and I found that my serger didn't appreciate any more than three layers at once. You can get a yard of hemp for $6.30 + shipping from fabricconnection.com. I was able to cut 20 pieces from one yard - at 2 layers a piece, that would make 10 soakers. Keep in mind that you need to pre-shrink your hemp first by washing and drying it several times (wash in hot water). It shrinks up to 25%. I didn't find that it stretched very much (at least not enough to be an issue).

Yup, definitely need sharp scissors :LOL I HATE cutting hemp, it is NOT fun. :LOL Sewing it is no problem though, my serger breezes through 3 layers as does my sewing machine. Like already mentioned, it doesn't have too much stretch even though it's a knit and it shrinks like crazy you can expect to lose anywhere from 25-35% off the length, but the width tends to stay about the same.
