Maine state aquarium

Has anyone been to the Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay? I was reading about it in the last issue of Downeast and the shark tank where you can "pet" the shark sounds cool. Is it worth a daytrip over to Boothbay (it's about 1.5 hours from us) if we were planning on combining it with other fun day-tripping things? (Love that Edgecomb Gallery on the road to Boothbay!)

The Aquarium doesn't open until Memorial Day, by the way.

hi there-
we've been there a bunch of times- but it's only about 35 minutes for us. it is really small- one room. there are basically two tanks- one with sharks (small sand sharks - i think) that you can touch and then a tide pool kind of a touch tank where you can touch/hold lobsters, crabs, sea cucumbers, urchins, etc. my son is 3 1/2 and he loves it, but i'm not sure its worth 1.5 hours drive, to be honest. but if you were planning a day trip to the area to see other things, sure, why not. there is also a railway village where you can ride the trains- we haven't done that yet.
if you go, have fun!

Hey thanks! I was thinking that is was most likely something that you would only do if you were already over there to begin with. We might head out there sometime this summer, maybe couple it with a hike somewhere or something. We like to explore.

We need to find time to go down to the Boston aquarium sometime. My boys love aquariums so much!

We've been there. It is very small, but neat.
I loved the baby (teeny teeny tiny!) lobsters floating in their tank, and the grounds, if you will, around the place are beautiful and on the water. Nice for a picnic in good weather.

Definitely combine with other things. And bring picnic stuff, the views are great!
