Another Hib thread

Thread Starter
I've been researching the Hib vaccine, and 2 things that I've found that I have questions about. Here's one:

http://www.chop.edu/consumer/jsp/div...c.jsp?id=75725

"Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacterium that infects the lining of the brain, causing meningitis."

Does Hib infection always result in meningitis? This is what seems to be implied here.

Is Hib infection equal to meningitis? Or does it cause it? I'm a bit confused by this.

Also this bolded statement:

"What are the side effects of the Hib vaccine?
Some children may feel pain or soreness in the local area of the shot and occasionally get a low-grade fever. The Hib vaccine does not have serious side effects."

How could this be true? I thought every vaccine had potential serious side effects. Of course, this article was reviewed and approved by Paul Offit.

Any links or input on this would be greatly appreciated.

No HIB infection does not equal menengitis. It CAN lead to menengitis, but not always.I don't have the statistics on what percentage of kids infected with HIb get menengitis and don't have time to search now.

As for side effects. I think compared to some of the other vaccines the HIB vax has less serious side effects. The ones such as type 1 diabetes are denied and "they" will say the studies showing the connection are flawed .

I think any vaccine has the potential to cause serious side effects and to say otherwise is a flat out lie.

I think it's valid to understand why some say those studies (was it only one or two?) was flawed rather than to dismiss it as .

Those who feel that the methodology in the studies was not well designed are not necessarily saying that vaccines don't cause serious side effects, either.

I don't believe I said they were did I? I was responding to the original posters quotation

Blah blah blah is also, yada yada yada, so on and so forth, etc.....at least in my world and this is how I was using it. I'm just too lazy right now to type out a long lengthy explanation of flawed methodology. I also do not believe anywhere I said it was not worth seeing WHY a study is believed to be flawed. I just said that is what the provax camp says about these studies (which they do)
