an emotional roller coaster.. (long post)

So as some of have seen in my siggy, Dh and I lost our first child and have had some losses since. Our first child was born via c-section so I'm attempting a vbac this time. For the record, I'm also a gestational diabetic so that's something to add to the list of fun pregnancy stuff. So here goes my roller coaster story about the last 24 hours.
Yesterday I went for my weekly biophysical profile. I was expecting it to be uneventful like all the other ones I've had. It was not. The fluid level was half of what it was last week, and was in the range where they would induce labor because of it. (It was a AFI of 5, by the way) Being a gestational diabetic, the OB that I see would like his gestational diabetics delivered at 39 weeks. My doc knows how badly I want a vaginal birth so he's willing to bend the rules as long as I'm okay and baby's okay. So yesterday's AFI level was the first sign that things are "different" in my pregnancy so I was sent to the hospital to start an induction. The only problem is, I have an unfavorable cervix. I'm only 1 cm dilated and not very effaced... I get to the hospital, and my doc gets me into a room and says he wants to "chat". He doesn't exactly feel comfortable doing an induction on an unfavorable cervix because of the risk of rupture so he gives me the option to wait and see, or schedule a c-section. I so badly want to get my daughter out because I'm anxious and fearful but I tearfully decided to let them monitor me overnight and then send me home to wait. I feel like this baby is never going to come. We've tried all the traditional labor induction methods -- sex, nipple stim, red raspberry leaf tea, EPO applied to the cervix.... I'm glad my doctor is looking out for my best interests in not forcing an induction that could lead to rupture or a c-section. If I had a softened cervix, we were going to try a foley cath to dilate me a bit before taking the next step.. That being said, what do I do now? I'm more terrified now that I know her fluid levels are low (as if I wasn't anxious enough before because of my twitchy baby).. Do I just schedule a c-section for a few days past my duedate if my cervix still hasn't prepared itself or do I wait until they force an induction or some kind of action because of my gestational diabetes and post-date?

I think you are just going to have to take this day by day. Right now, you and the baby are alright - or your doc would be pressuring you for either an induction or a c-section.

As far as labor starting, things can change very quickly. Tomorrow you could be significantly more dilated.

What other options do you have for an induction?

Another thought - how is your baby positioned? If she is anything other than head-down & anterior you may want to see a chiropractor and try getting the Webster technique. That may help the baby to put pressure on your cervix and get dilation progressing.

I had the Webster technique done and a few hours later went into hard labor. It was on the third try. PM me if you want the contact info for the chiropractor.

We were originally going to try some cervadil to soften the cervix and pitocin to start labor -- But he didn't want to hyper-stimulate my uterus with the cervadil, or do pit for a long time because of the risk of rupture. We came up with the idea to do the foley catheter induction and cervadil but he still didn't feel comfortable with the cervadil on a vbac. So right now, we're at a standstill.... and I'm a basketcase.

LOL -- we must think alot alike. I went to the chiropractor yesterday afternoon before my dr. appt. My pelvis was out of alignment so they fixed that. She's head down, and is engaged in the pelvis.. it's just not dilating me or effacing me at all.

Have you considered drinking a ton of water and asking for another ultrasound/bp to see if that will raise your fluid levels? It can be due to dehydration. That would be my first step before an induction for low fluid. Do you have another u/s scheduled for next week?

First I just want to give you a hug I agree that as long as you doc isn't pushing for an induction then I would wait and see for now. I would keep doing what you are doing and reevaluate as you see the doctor. Fluid levels can change drastically day by day so tomorrow your levels might be different. I am sorry you are dealing with this.

I drank a ton when I was in the hospital overnight for observation. When they repeated the ultrasound my levels went from 5 to 7.8 so that's why they sent me home. It's still not a "great" fluid level but it's more acceptable... I'm continuing to drink today, and just got back from a 2 mile walk hoping to get something moving..

I don't really know what to tell you except that I believe what is meant to happen for you, will happen and will show itself easy for you to know in the next few days...I wish you peace while your dealing with all these emotions and decisions, though, I know it must be hard.

I just want to send you a hug. I can't imagine the fear you are feeling right now, but try to relax and have faith that your body will kick into gear soon.

Thank you guys for hearing me out. I feel so much better after getting my fears out in the open. I know she'll come soon and in her own time and safely.. I just need more faith in my body and in my baby. I'm working on it though!

I have been thinking about you today... I was just signing on to see if you had delivered. I will keep you and baby in my thoughts over the next few days and looking forward to your post that baby was born. Take care and sending you extra vibes....

I just popped in to see how you were doing and if anything had changed. I hope that whatever happens as far as your birth is concerned, that you find peace in it.

No changes. I had contractions last night that stopped when I layed down to go to sleep. No bloody show or any other indication that labor will start soon.

me too! Beth

How many weeks are you right now? Would you be willing to try castor oil? I think my homebirth midwives recommend 2 tablespoons of castor oil blended in a chocolate peanut butter milkshake

It sounds like you have a GREAT doc

Today I'm 39 weeks and 4 days according to my last menstrual period. I'm 40 weeks if you went by the date I actually conceived.
I was thinking a castor oil smoothie might not be a bad idea! I went today and got some black licorice too to see if that may work.

I'd do what was safest for me and my baby. I know you will make the right decision for you. You are a strong mama.
