Thinking of a cheaper option...

Thread Starter
I've been using a smallish collection of bum genius and fuzzibunz for my dd, along with a backup stash of motherease one sizes with PUL covers and one aristocrat woolen cover.

ANyways I haven't been thrilled with the pocket dipes. I find the fit awkward, I find that the microfiber inserts get STINKY really easily, and I find that dd gets rashy in them.

I also am not crazy about the PUL covers for the motherease.

Do any of you use either prefolds or fitted cotton dipes and exclusively wool covers? I'm expecting again in August, and I first and foremost don't want to spend a fortune on diapers, but more importantly I want an option that won't cause rashes. I'm inclined to get some newborn prefolds and a couple newborn wool covers, and then bump up my stash of motherease and get another couple wool covers to see us through the first year. Will that do? Or is it still a good idea to keep a couple pockets or PUL covers on hand?

What have your experiences been?

Thanks!

I am happiest using prefolds and fitteds with wool covers.

You could also try stuffing your pockets with infant prefolds

I used newborn prefolds and bummi covers pretty much exclusively with my last 3 babies. It worked out fine, no excessive rashes. And after the first time, diapering was free. The prefolds have pretty much worn out and are being used as rags now though.

I use cotton pf's exclusively (with hemp doublers at night). I have used wool in past. It's great for the skin and it never leaks, but none of my kids clothes fit over any of our wool covers, so we rarely use them. I really like nylon covers. They breath and my almost never get rashes. With my newborns I really liked bummis pull-ons. They're way cheap and work great. As my babies grew I prefered a wrap-style and switched to bummis originals. Now that my youngest is a year old, I'm really liking gdiapers covers with a pf trifolded inside.
Anway, I really love my cotton. I tried FB's and didn't care for them for many reasons. I would ditch the pocket diapers all together. Good luck!

PF are great for newborn but I personally wouldn't use wool because of all the newborn poop. I really liked XS Bumkins with the airflow flap in back, for newborn.

I loved using prefolds on my little guy when he was a newborn. We did have leaks (some of which was user error since I was new to prefolds) so I didn't really like to use wool. But once I got the hang of it, my little guy was mainly in prefolds and wool. If I wanted to put him in "regular" clothes, I put him in a pocket diaper. So I did have a big variety of diapers - fitteds, prefolds, wool covers, PUL covers, pockets. Honestly, that just made it confusing for me, and I switched to mainly prefolds and it worked great.

We use a lot of prefolds, but do use PUL covers or fleece soakers. I'm just not that big into wool, it seems that DD1 has some sensitivity to it. I like a variety, but I would be fine just using prefolds. If you are looking for something easy and inexpensive, they are a great way to go.

After nearly five years of cloth diapering we've tried lots of fancy diapers, and honestly, $2 prefolds and bummies covers work great. Diapering options that cost five or ten times as much are nowhere close to five or ten times better.

I've got no experience with wool covers though.

I've used a combination of both, PUL and wool. We have lots of styles of diapers, and while most of our pockets work well, I do find myself reaching often for fitteds or prefolds. With this new babe (I'm due Aug, too!), I will use more wool and mostly pfs and fitteds. Just seem easier and more natural. I get so sick of stuffing pockets!

I have to say I like Thirsties covers for a newborn because of the gussets and they are easier to clean the poop off of than wool.

If you sew or knit, you can consider making some of your own wool covers. Definately a $$ saver!

We are now using exclusively prefolds and flats and its working great! Like you I got tired of all the leaking from the pockets and such. I knit so I have several soakers and longies for night time and outings...but usually we just go coverless while they are running around the house :

After trying many, many options and combinations, I think the easiest/cheapest/healthiest option is a trifolded prefold in a wool wrap cover.

My personal favorite is GMD prefolds and Imse Vimse wool covers. Just throw a trifolded prefold in the wool cover, velcro it up, and you're done. Baby's skin can breathe, and the cotton prefolds clean so well and don't hold stink like microfiber or hemp.

Prefolds are great and so cheap! I second the easy, cheap, leak-free solution of using prefolds and Bummis - you can't go wrong! But right now I'm getting way into wool and plan on using prefolds and fitteds with PUL and wool covers for the next babe.

I think that you should hold off on using wool on your newborn. Just get some NB Prowraps or Bummis to use with prefolds until your baby isn't pooping so often! As long as your wool doesn't get pooped on, it can be reused. But that NB poop is so explosive and frequent that you may go through a lot of covers. Besides, your baby can outgrow expensive wool covers quickly.

I used prefolds and nb imse vime wool wraps when my dd was a newborn. I NEVER had a leak! I jelly rolled and snappied them inside the cover. I HATED pul covers and pockets on my dd along with fitteds they all left horrible marks on her legs I think wool wraps are fine for newborns if you jelly roll and snappi. To this day I prefer snappied prefolds but I don't have any med wool covers so I can't find a cover I like. I need to just go buy some and stop wasting my money on pockets that stink, leak and cause rashes: I will say my dd did leak out of pockets and sposies. She could poop down to her toes and all the way up her neck and the prefolds ALWAYS kept it contained. I am actually still amazed that prefolds work so good. I will be using prefolds and wool on my next baby for sure. I sold all my nb/sm pockets and fitteds. I still have some OS or med/lg pockets and AIOS around for outings or if an outfit won't fit over the prefolds and wool.
