Milk vs. Cow's Milk - Page 2

It depends on context. When I was consuming goat's milk, I'd often clarify "cow milk" or
"goat milk" even on shopping lists and when discussing purchases in the store. When there were bottles of breastmilk in the fridge, I'd specify whether we were referring to cow, goat, or human milk (alternatively called "human milk", "breastmilk", "my milk", "mommy milk" or "ee bee em").

Now that everybody's weaned and I'm not consuming any mammal milk at all, the cow's milk is often called "milk" around here- as it's the only mammal milk in the house.

I honestly can't remember what I said when I was nursing the girls, as pumping and bottlefeeding wasn't part of our routine.

I guess I call it cow's milk. There are a lot of milk types available.
PS: What is almond milk??

we call it milk. the littlest baby drinks mama milk, the bigger baby drinks bottles, and the kids just drink milk. dh and i don't drink milk of any sort and the kids drink very little - a gallon usually expires with half of it left. we hardly ever drink a whole gallon. (i try to give it to my mom before it goes bad though.)

We usually just call cow's milk "milk" in our house. DH is the only one that drinks it, although I cook with it. Sometimes we have unhomogenized cow's milk around, which I love but DH doesn't, and then we have to specify between those.
DD only gets mama's milk, and, because of that, the thought of giving her cow's milk never crosses my mind, so if anyone asks about that then it needs a qualifier or I get confused.
At her last doctor's appointment (she was 15 months old), the doctor asked if she got any milk. I was genuinely baffled since we had just talked about how she was still nursing a dozen times a day... until the doctor clarified that she meant cow's milk. I really wasn't trying to be difficult!

we have several people in our house who are vegan, so we have to specify, cow milk, goat milk, soy milk, rice milk, almond milk etc.

my ds drinks mama milk (called nuh-nuhs) and almond milk. It's made out of almonds (think soaked in water and food processed)

The only kind of milk DS drinks is cow's milk, so there's no need to specify; I just say, "Would you like some milk?" Milk doesn't come up often enough in conversation with other people to feel the need to get them thinking, although I agree that saying "cow's milk" does stand out and would make people notice what it really is.

DS calls my breastmilk "Mommy milk" when he talks about what DD eats. Last night DD started crying after both kids had been asleep for a while (they share a room), and I went up to nurse her but tucked my DS in first because his covers had come off, and as I leaned over his bed to kiss him his eyelids fluttered and he whispered in his tired little voice, "She's sad -- why don't you give her some Mommy milk?" My sweet boy.

ETA: While getting ready to feed DD this afternoon, I noticed that I just call breastmilk "milk" when I'm talking to her, as in, "Are you ready for some milk?" I guess I just say "milk" whether I'm referring to cow's milk or mama milk, and my kids know what I mean based on context.

I just started giving my little one cow milk, and I guess when I needed to make the distinction it just came out "Moo cow milk." We can breastmilk just breastmilk or milk. I have also called cow milk "sour milk" because the milk from the grocery store just tastes awful. I go to the dairy store to get better tasting milk, but can't get over there often enough.

Anyone else find it funny that we're discussing whether we call cow's milk "milk" because it's not human milk, so cow's milk shouldn't be the default "milk" yet we're okay with calling things milk that aren't even milk (rice "milk," soy "milk," almond "milk," etc.)? How weird is that? Rice, soy, and almonds don't lactate, right?

That's a very good point. Perhaps we should just start calling all of those "opaque beverages" and then there's no issue

When DS was almost two he started calling it "boobie." It came out of nowhere. We lessened saying "he wants boobie!" when he wanted to nurse or calling breasts "boobies." We never intended to give nursing a name but let him decide on his own (I generally just asked if he wanted to nurse). He just picked out "boobie" on his own. Too cute! It's funny the things kids say that aren't as derogatory as normally intended...like how my niece replaced the "tr" sound with "f" because she couldn't pronounce it correctly...and she looooved pointing out trucks. Probably because we giggled every time.

I was thinking the same. Maybe I should call non-mammal milk juice instead. Rice juice, almond juice, etc.

And I got a totally funny picture of a lactating almond in my head when I read that.

Everything is called "milk". It's a given that my older and my husband mean cow milk and that when I'm referring to the babe that it is breastmilk. We have alternative opaque beverages occassionally but they are rare so they are called by their full name "rice milk"/"soy milk"
