Live105 - The Woody Show 3/13/09

Hi,
On Live 105 FM in San Francisco a wacky morning radio show called The Woody Show had a segment about circumcision Friday morning. They called it "The Great Wiener Debate." You can listen to the segent free at their web site: http://www.live105.com/pages/3716002.php

While not remotely pro-intact, I think the show is instructive for all of us who try to make the case against circumcision.

Part of me wishes I didn't listen to this. I felt so demoralised by it. I had to sleep on it to get over it. But you're right, this really is helpful to see how people think...I am just hoping that in 30 years, the vast majority in this country will be able to listen/read stuff like this from this decade and shake their heads in bewilderment.

I hope it will be like my amazement of the feeding schedule for me that my mother was sent home with from the hospital: bottle of formula; 3 hours later, bottle of water; 3 hours later, bottle of formula; 3 hours later, bottle of water; etc. I showed my mainstream ped for kicks and she was floored. We don't understand why I am not dead.

Well, then you should be thrilled if you didn't listen to today's show.

They trotted out Dr. Drew Pinsky (of Loveline and Celebrity Rehab) who said there is no question, do it.

They read part of my letter about an adult being able to deal with the pain better (which sucks, because my letter was mostly about other stuff and I always say the pain is irrrelevant if it's something the patient really needs) and Dr. Drew just said there are "so many adults" who get cut who wish they had it done earlier so they wouldn't be flat on their backs for 3 weeks.

They just insisted that as long as there is a slight chance that circumcising might prevent something, why not do it.

They just can't acknowledge that normal body parts have value, and that it's reason enough to leave the decision to the owner of the body. They just have no idea what they are missing. That's why I always close with
