FIL wants me to reconsider

The Rotavirus vaccine, because his two oldest sons both "almost died" or were "within a day of death" from having it. One of them had it while they were living in Mexico.

Spam me.

I keep meaning to ask if they were vaccinated or not--or if that vax was around then (they are now 11 and 8, and had it when they were 1yo).

The current rotovirus vaccine is very new. I believe it must be started ( the series) before 12 weeks or they dont give it. Rotovirus is dangerous because it causes dehydration. If it gets bad you go to the ER and get IV fluids.

We skipped it because it can CAUSE rotoviurs ( its a live virus that sheds and I know of a whole family that got it from one vaccinated baby)

I've read (correct me if I'm wrong) that Rota is not THAT dangerous in US (especially with bf'ing and medical care) and that it was added to the US schedule to pay for the 3rd world countries' vaxes.

I figured it was new. My son had it before we stopped vaxing and it is the only one he had a reaction to, and also the only time he was sick in his first 2 years of life. Isn't that also the one that was recalled (right before DS1 got it)?? RotaTeq?

Thanks

Rota can be serious if not properly treated. Dehydration being the most serious concern.

I would not get this vax (as haven't for my ds who is 10.5 months old now)
It is too new and the last Rota vax was pulled after killing a bunch of infants. Whose to say there won't be something with this one? Its too new.

I also know of a baby who got rota after the vax and would up in the PICU.

Breastfeeding confers a ton of protection (not sure if you BF) also I give probiotics to DS as well.

Yes we BF (but no probiotics yet b/c, well, I can't figure out how to get 'em in! He won't take anything but a boob and it says not to mix with food...)

ETA: FIL's two kids were only BF for a few months--so when they got Rota they weren't BF'd anymore.

Side effects from the vax are the same as if they got rotavirus. You should be able to bfeed through it without a problem, if they get it at all.

I've been tuning into Dr. Jay Gordon's Vaccinations? DVD. He stated that the worst case that could happen with Rotavirus, at least in the U.S., is that your LO will need an IV to replace lost fluids.

I dissolve it in breastmilk and then put in in a syringe and squirt it in DS's mouth

Honestly, I don't get into debates with relatives (or anyone else) about my children's vaccination status. Your FIL had his chance to make decisions about his own children, now it's your turn. I've never had a conversation where I start throwing facts at someone to try and prove them wrong to be productive. But maybe I just have stubborn relatives.

I'd just smile and nod and thank him for the concern and ask him to pass the bean dip.

I've been getting much better results from eating kimchee and drinking kombucha than I got from years of swallowing probiotic pills. For the first time in my life things are moving along...knock on wood.

So I wonder if babies could tolerate kimchee juice?

Is he talking about your current children getting it, or subsequent children? Because both of your precious littles are too old for the rotavirus vaccine.

Problem solved!

Oh, and just in case you need "proof"...

From the RotaTeq package insert:

Quote:
The vaccination series consists of three ready-to-use liquid doses of RotaTeq administered orally starting at 6 to 12 weeks of age, with the subsequent doses administered at 4- to 10-week intervals. The
third dose should not be given after 32 weeks of age

He was talking about my current children getting it.

And oh, he had "done his research extensively"...
