What size cutting mat to buy??

I could really use a cutting mat. I'm working with felt & i'd like to start quilting. I went to look at mats and there were way too many sizes to choose from. I came back with nothing.
What is a good size, I don't want to get something too small or too big I cant store it. HELP

My first mat was the Olfa 18x24. It works fine for smaller things, and I've made due for bigger things, but it was sometimes difficult. I keep it out on my sewing table and use it if I have to trim something up, cut up something small, etc.

A few months ago, I bought the 24x36 and it is so much better! It makes life a lot easier. You do need to think about where you are going to cut, and will the table hold the mat. Or some people cut on the floor. My 24x36 fits great on the island in my kitchen and since that is counter height, it saves your back. I clear off the island, put down my mat, and can cut my fabric while the kids are playing around me, and still be able to keep an eye on them, etc.

Wish I'd bought it sooner! But the little one is nice for small things because I keep it out all the time and it just sits next to my sewing machine.

the bigger the better.

The giant one I got came with a small one too, and I never use the little one. And I wish the big one was bigger.

I agree that you should go bigger as opposed to smaller. My go-to is 24x36, and fits perfectly on a table that I use 95% of the time for cutting. I've never wished for a smaller cutting mat, but I have occasionally wished for a bigger one.

I have a 36"x59" mat that I love. I got it at Joann and there is a table that goes with it but I don't have that. I just use mine on the floor for now.

I've had my 24x36 for about 20 years and it's great but I often need more space so I have an 18x24 that I often use with it. I recently saw the huge ones at Joann and would get it in a second if I could afford it. If you'll be cutting out adult (or big kid) clothes, it would be totally worth it. And, considering that I've been using my old one for about 2 decades, it's not all that expensive...

I'd get the biggest one you can fit on your work space. Needing to work in pieces because your work space isn't big enough is frustrating.

As for storing, I've seen people use skirt hangers to hang it in the closet, which works great since it needs to be stored flat.

Thanks for the input. I'm going with bigger one. Waiting for them to go on sale. The day I went in one brand was 50%off, hoping not to wait too long for the next sale.

They are pretty expensive, but the bigger the better! If you buy a small one, you will end up regretting it and buying a bigger one later on. I did, any way
