numbing stuff before shots?

This is the best place I could think of for finding this info.

What's that stuff you can use to numb a kid's skin before they get shots?

We are non-vaxers, but ds1 is getting dental surgery next month and going under GA. He's afraid of getting an IV so I want to have this stuff on hand or know what to ask the doctors about.

I just had my gallbladder removed a few months ago, and before I got my IV, the nurse gave me an injection of numbing medication. It was short, and I didn't feel the numbing injection or the IV. I would ask the anesthesiologist at the pre-op, if he has one, or ask the person administering the IV before they do it. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help.

They have lidocane cream for that, I have to get it because I am a pansy who has natural birthes but get a needle near me and I am done!

The numbing cream is called EMLA... and they need to apply it about a half hour before they stick the needle in. It's not particularly fast acting, but it works pretty well.

Same here.

I refused the iv for both of my hospital births partly because of my intense fear of the needle, lol.

A few yrs ago when I was at the childrens hospital[I'm 21 now. xD] it was routine to put a white numbing cream on everyones hand in the ER incase of an IV. I'm not sure what it was called but it gave me a painful red rash on my hand in the exact area where the cream touched. So just be careful, it was more painful than any IV.

EMLA cream. You will need to ask for a Rx for it. You put it on at least 30 minutes before the injection or IV insertion and you have to keep it covered and only wipe it off right before the injection or insertion.

We used it on our DS1 when he had skin testing for allergies, and also our DS2 when he was hospitalized for his ruptured appendix and had to have several blood draws.

They usually gas kids down first and give the IV when they are already out. Ask if this is an option.

I bough EMLA cream from a canadian drug site when I was 16. : Its OTC over there. I seriously bought it for no purpose other than it would be good to have on hand just in case I needed it at some point. (Not a fan of needles either!) I think the first time I used it was like.. 3 years later for the blood draws at my first prenatal (I closed my eyes and had no idea when the needle even went in. It rocked.)

When I had my wisdom teeth out, they used this spray stuff that instantly makes your skin feel really cold. The surgeon swore it'd make it so you don't feel a thing, but I still felt it. It helped though. Definitely better than using nothing. I have no idea what it was called.
