I had brought lots of electrolyte water and snacks and noone ever said anything to me about it, even when I started throwing it all up and the nurses came in to check on me and clean up. No one mentioned pain medication or an IV to me once.
The nurse midwife that caught DS was really great. When I felt the urge to push and got on my hands and knees, she just sat back and let me do my thing. When that wasn't working well, she stepped in and helped with other positions and then when it became apparent he was having a hard time getting under my pubic bone, she worked really hard to help me work him down. After 2 hours of pushing, she told me at that point she was supposed to call the OB on call, but the baby was tolerating everything well (at that point a nurse was holding the monitor on my belly while I squatted) and she believed I could do this. I'm so grateful to her for that. He did finally descend and was born with his arm bent up by his head. It hurt like hell, but I did it.
I'm pretty sure if I had been medicated and lying on my back, I would have eventually had a C-section due to failure to progress. It just took so much work to get him down and I really had to work with the contractions.
Not one person on the staff ever made me feel like a natural birth was impossible or stupid or anything.

My postpartum experience wasn't as good, so we got out of there as soon as we could, but the L&D people were great.
If you don't mind, why was your postpartum experience not as good? What was wrong or would you have prefered? I have read this a lot, that women want to leave real soon. I am considering a hospital birth this time *for* the postpartum help/babymoon. Am I totally off in viewing it that way?

Kaiser is it's own little world, so I don't know how much the way they do things is the way EVERYONE does things.

I birthed both my babies at Kaiser. The first time, the NICU almost ruined my breastfeeding relationship (see my blog for that story), the second time, a few of the nurses scoffed at my cloth pads and cloth diapers, and just made me feel....I dunno. I just didn't like it.

All three of my children were hospital births.

First one - I was young, unprepared, terrified. Thank goodness I had a nurse who was an absolute angel, walked me through every step, told me my options, respected my decisions...

Second birth had lots of complications and I was unconscious most of the time so no real memories except a lot of fear and pain and feeling deeply grateful that my son and I survived.

Third birth - beautiful. Doctor that I really trusted, honored my birth choices, hospital very accommodating to rooming in and nursing moms.

I had a good hospital birth -- my birth story is in my blog.

I am lucky in that I live near a very birth-friendly hospital and that my more-clueful friends directed me to a great practice of midwives.

Yes, I ended up being induced (b/c of PUPPPS) but I had a birth plan and it was followed to the letter. I had a great nurse and OB and went through it just fine-no pain meds, intermittent monitoring, no IV, etc. I had in my plan that I wanted to push on my own, and when the nurse asked the OB if she should help direct my pushing, he said no. He just sat back and waited in case there were any problems.
It was really nice. I would have preferred a homebirth, just for my own comfort, but we couldn't afford a midwife out of pocket. My OB was as close as you can get (he's actually the backup OB for the local midwives) Just make sure you have a GOOD OB who will listen, and will do as you want! S/he will make sure the nurses do as you wish.
Good luck!
