Natural shampoo not working!

Thread Starter
I switched over to a more natural shampoo (Burt's Bees) and it leaves a filmy residue on my scalp. It itches like crazy and makes it look like I have dandruff. I tried another natural shampoo, I forget the name of it but it was for clarifying the hair, but it did not help.

Any suggestions?

Try sungoldsoap.com Level H. All oils are completely saponified. I think adding additional oils after saponification, which most soaps and shampoos do, is what makes them feel greasy. Level H is extremely hypoallergenic, well-tolerated by many people with multiple chemical sensitivity. Really great for people like me who cannot tolerate soaps made with olive or coconut oils. I have been using it for almost a year as a shampoo, body wash and hand soap. I do dilute it 7:1 with rose water.

Read the testimonials on the site. People (including me) love this soap. And I do mean LOVE IT. I can't say enough nice things about it and what it does for my skin and hair.

I can relate. I have tried Kiss My Face shampoo and another brand I cannot recall right this minute. Neither worked very well. My hair still felt greasy and my scalp itched. DH tried them as well and he had REALLY BAD dandruff and a VERY OILY scalp.

I have also tried Burt's Bees shampoo soap and it did not work at all for me (I had the same issues as you). I have found shampoo bars that I like, and you can find them by googling "shampoo bar". Be careful, as some companies add a ton of junk to their soaps.

My regular care is shampoo (you have to pull the suds through your hair - you're literally washing the strands vs. letting the suds drip down the length) followed by apple cider vinegar rinse (1 tbsp to 2 cups water). I also use rhassoul clay on my hair once a week, and oil it with olive oil at some other time during the week (or when I remember). I don't have any problems with flakiness, dry or oily scalp, and my hair looks great.

I love love love soaps from :

They offer smaller sample sizes, so you can figure out what works best for you.

It could be "funky hair syndrome", which can happen when you switch to natural shampoo bars from regular shampoo. The remedy is a vinegar rinse. Dilute some vinegar (apple cider is nice, I just use white) about 1:4 in water and spray it onto your hair after shampooing.

Another thing I noticed is that, as the above poster said, you need to work it through your hair. The first couple times I used it, I didn't use enough and my hair just wasn't clean. Then I made sure I rubbed it all over, and on the ends (I have very long hair). Still, a 6.5 oz bar has lasted me and hubby 4 months (together we wash about 6x per week)!

Finally, some folks have reported that their shampoo bars don't work so well in hard water. We have soft water.

I really like the Chagrin Valley Shampoo bars. My favorite is the Neem and TTO bar, which completely left me flake free. I had gotten a few samples to try of some of the different kinds and the others left my scalp flaky white and itchy. The Neem was wonderful!

p.s. I'm sure that the other bars are fine for other people, but I just have a really sensative scalp.

I hate burts bees shampoo. California baby or baking soda works great for me.

Thanks for starting this thread! Last week hubby and I started using the Baby Bee Shampoo Bar along with an ACV rinse (1T in 1c of water). Hubby has really grimy hair as a result. He went for a haircut the other day and the stylist asked him, Do you wash your hair? Yes. Do you wash every day? Yes. Did you wash today? Umm, yes. That bad. But he's going to persevere for a bit in case this is just the adjustment phase. My hair was also quite grimy on top, but I decided to go the no 'poo route and give my scalp a good massage with water instead. I can already see an improvement! And the lengths of my hair are looking nice and glossy. I can't even believe it's nicer than it was with my expensive leave-in conditioner! Anyway, I'm going to give this a try (with occasional usage of baking soda and ACV) for a month or two. If it doesn't end up working for my hair, I'm going to try the Chagrin Valley shampoo bars. Their descriptions are so tempting!

They are really expensive, but I like John Masters Organics. It gets your hair so clean that you don't need to wash it every day (in fact when I was reading his website a long time ago he doesn't recommend washing every day)...so really it works out okay cost wise!
