Stick on tattoos

Thread Starter
So my DH & I are a little nervous about letting our 6 year old daughter put these on her skin. I looked up ethyl cellulse (which is exactly how it is spelled on the back) to see what I could find out. And so far this is what I found.

From Wikipedia

Ethyl cellulose is an derivative of cellulose in which some of the hydroxyl groups on the repeating glucose units are converted into ethyl ether groups. The number of ethyl groups can vary depending on the manufacture.
It is mainly used as a thin-film coating material.[1]
Ethyl cellulose is used as a food additive as an emulsifiera.

I also found is a bunch of temporary tattoo websites that just list it as an ingredient.

So I ask...what do you think about stick on tattoos? Do you let your kids put them on? How do you know they are safe?

Thanks!

Wow -- never even occured to me concerned. Its not like they are going to get eaten or that they are very big. Realizing that "food safe" doesn't mean "healthy", I'm pretty much of the mind that its one of those "not worth the stress" sorts of things. My kids get into these kicks every now and then and I don't mind as long as they aren't some violent image.

That's where I am on them. Not worth me stressing about...

Plain old cellulose is what plants (wood, cotton, etc.) are made of-- we eat lots of it! I figure the tattoo just sitting there on the surface of her skin- not being consumed and not appearing to be absorbed much- I never worried about the adhesive on bandaids either, which I'm sure is a bit more squirrely from an ingredient perspective. I'd write it off as something not to stress over-- there enough other things out there to worry about!

Not worried . . . my kids love and have fun with temporary tattoos.

Agree - this is just an occasional thing, so I do not worry. It isn't like soap and shampoo, which she is using every day of her life, over her whole body - this is once in a while, on a very small patch of skin.

I've never thought about the ingredients either! I don't mind the kids using them!

thanks for letting me know

my daughter has always decorated her body. first with markers and then with temp tattoos. strange considering neither her father or me has any.... but i never thought of it, which is also strange since i do know that what enters through pores is just as important as what we ingest.... i mean, we dont even use shampoo.... but she loves them so much....thanks for letting me know. anyone got info on using markers on the skin too? i dont think i will stop her though, she loves the freedom of expression too much. and, as perfect as i intended everything to be, we eat lucky charms and other food colorings and gmos sometimes...

I don't stress about tattoos but, I do hate that I have to use nail polish remover to take them off.

I'm another one who has never given it much though, definitely wouldn't stress over it.

I mean, how often do they even put on temporary tattoos? (says the mom of a 4 yo who had firetruck tats all up his arms and one on his cheek after his b-day party )

I do get concerned about anything that goes on their skin such as soap, shampoo, lotion and chose the safer options, but those are much more frequent than temporary tattoos. It seems like a phase for most kids... like, they don't want them everyday for 18 years, yk? cause by then, they'll want the real thing

We've always had great luck using oil. I tend to use mineral oil, but another one would probably work too.

huh.. never occured to me to wash them off

my older girls : tattoos- since they can be like mommy and daddy without the pain

in fact, more often than not, they have some sort of goblin (from Halloween), fairy, butterfly and/or other misc image on their bodies...

I've never thought about the ingredients, and I may do my own research, but I think that you can count me in with the other mamas who don't want/need to stress out over it. My kids would be : without their body art, anyway..

eta: we are all free to parent/care for our children however we see fit (as long as it is also in the child's best interest)- so be merry and tattoo-free if that's how you feel the most comfortable

I would NEVER use nail polish remover to remove them. Baby oil works just fine! But, we usually just leave them on until they eventually wash off in the bath.

Markers on skin would make me nervous -- in fact, it is a clear rule at our house that we do not write on our skin. But, that is one of those rules that I grew up with and that instinctually just feels right to me. As far as facts about marker ingredients... A google search would produce some, I'm sure!

we love temp tattoos!! I have used them to teach the boys to count! So we have used lots of them. And we either let them wear off or come off in the tub or we use lotion or baby oil to get them off

Baby oil takes them off very easily. Never use nail polish remover on the skin!
