Infection or normal?

Hi! I am posting about my 5 y/o intact son. Tonight he was manipulating his penis (for some reason he always does this when I read to him before bed, even though I ask him to seek privacy, lol) when he said that it "kinda" hurt. He showed me, and the foreskin is red.

It does appear that one side has a bump (?) under the foreskin? There is no pus, and no pain in urination that he has reported.

Does this sound like normal foreskin seperation?

This sounds very normal. Separation can be a bit uncomfortable for some boys. That bump is a smegma pearl (just a collection of skin cells) It is totally normal and it will work itself out over time.

The foreskin is very vascular so when separation is happening it can get a little red, itchy, or inflamed. It is different for every boy. Just think of when you bump your inner lip. The lips are very vascular much like the foreskin. Just give it some time and it should pass.

Did you see our sticky about normal separation? It is in the resources section.

Btw, infections are really quite rare.

Thanks! No, I didn't see the sticky, but I will read over it now!

I knew infections were rare, that's why I was dreading the thought that it could be one. I know several people who would be tossing around (unjustified) "I told you so"s

Thanks again!

I agree with latinalonestar. The inner foreskin is supposed to be red and if he was messing with it that will make the outside appear red as well.
