Therasuit Intensive Therapy

Has anyone used the therasuit intensive therapy for their child? http://www.therasuit.com/

We have signed up for a 3 week intensive program in July at Pediatrics Plus in Houston. I would love to hear someone else's thoughts on this program.

I've really been wanting to try the Therasuit for my daughter Alyse. Our PT uses it on another patient and says it helps. I asked my dd's rehab doctor for a RX and she doesn't believe in it. So I'm not sure. Where are you from? I live in San Antono only like 3 hours away. That would be awesome if Alyse could go to that. Anyway, I think its worth a try.

I've heard of it. I'm pretty sure they use it at this place we may be going to for PT soon. (It's all up in the air right now). I believe you have to be at least three years old to do it and that it is this intensive program, as the links suggest. I don't know that much more about it than that. I would definitely try it however! The one OT I spoke to a while ago about it said it seemed to REALLY help some kids. Please keep us posted. I would love to know if you find it successful.

I tried searching for clinics in our area but the link seemed to be broken. If anyone notices when it gets fixed or if there is another way to search, please let me know. Thanks!

We live in the D/FW area, so we are about 4.5-5 hours away from Houston. It is goingto be tough staying in a hotel with three kids for three weeks, but I hope it pays off.

We are blessed to have a family practice doctor who will write us a rx for almost anything that we think will be beneficial for Rebekah. Maybe your doctor could be persuaded to change his mind.

Here is a direct link to centers that use the therasuit method across the US: http://therasuitmethod.com/suit_therapy_clinics.htm

Unfortunately, it looks like the only center listed in Washington has closed it doors.

I will let you know how it goes with Rebekah. I was able to talk to the owner/PT at the center in Houston yesterday and she was very encouraging. She hopes to be able to get Rebekah crawling this summer and then we could go back again in 2-3 months and work on standing and walking.

Mellanie - you were so nice to look this up for me in WA. Thanks! Ironically enough this place Esperanza that closed it doors, is the place where the OT that I had spoken with used to work. She is now at a new place, and I'm under the impression that some of the therapists from Esperanza went to the new place too, but they are only doing in-home care and don't have a brick-and-mortar location yet. I'm currently trying to get approval from our insurance company to start seeing them but I know it is a long shot. Anyway, all that to say that I'm hoping that eventually we might be able to do this too. Thanks for looking into it! Good luck to you guys!

That would be great if you could get in with the new group. I hope insurance will approve it for you!

Hi. I have been looking into Therasuit for my daughter who is almost 2, and presents with great motor delays. They treat beginning at 18 months. I live in NY. I called two different places and both quoted me a price of apx $6,000.00 !!! I guess I was just wondering if any of you encountered this great fee, since I did not see anyone on the message board refer to any great amount of money spent. My insurance may reimburse a percentage, but that would still be a great deal of money! A number of you mentioned scripts from doctors, etc. ANY advice would be welcome as to how I could get this covered through Early Intervention, Insurance, or any other means. Thank you so much in advance!

Hi Mellanie!
We're doing intensive this late spring/early summer. insurance doesn't cover it and it will be $5500. We don't have OON benefits so we can't submit it for the nominal reimbursement.

Hope you and Bekah are well.

Hi all. I've been out of the loop for sometime, but it is interesting that this thread had resurfaced because we actually just schedule for Finn to do this therapy starting at the end of March. We have new insurance now and it is supposed to be covered, at least in part. I'm nervous and hopeful. I know it can take a lot out of the kiddos who do it, but we are willing to try. I hope others have success too! Let's keep each other posted.

Doublestroller,

Can you let me know what places you researched/visited in NY that offers the Therasuit method? I'm hoping to take my 2.5 year old son there sometime in April or May and is now looking for a recommendation. I heard that 5.5K/6K is the going price for 3 weeks (3 hours per day, 5 days a week).

BJMing,

The place we are going to is Leaps and Bounds in Astoria. Its 5.5K for 3 weeks. http://www.leapsandboundspeds.com/

There is another place run by a fabulous gal name Amy in L.I. She quoted me around the same price.

Hi Newmothermary,

I was just looking at the leapsandbounds website the other day and was going to give them a call! Good to know that you will be going there. If it works out, I want to take my son there in mid April. Would that be around the same time as you guys? Have you visited the place? What do you think of their therapists?

Can you please also tell me a little more about Amy? We are in Westchester so I don't want to have to travel too far.

cheers,
Ming

Hi Ming,
Devon (4 yrs old) receives after school therapy at L&B's. This is how I know the therapists there. The PTs there are excellent. Really! The couple who runs the center is super nice too. The place in Long Island I know less about, but I know this. Amy is loved so much by my friend whose dd has cp that once the settlement comes in from the hospital (the cp was the doc's fault) she wants to hire Amy as her full-time therapist. That's how much she loves this woman. Since I know L&B's first hand and trust their therapists, we've decided to go with them.

If you have other questions, ask away!
If I can ask, does your ds have a dx? My dd does not and its been a source of endless frustration. Ugh!

I don't post here often anymore since all the popup ads make it run so slow, but I'm glad I stopped in today and saw that my old thread got resurrected. I hadn't realized that I did not come back and post an update. We took Bekah to Pediatrics Plus in Houston in July last year. They billed it as regular PT, so we only had to pay our co-pay for each visit. She did really well and was crawling by the end of the first week. We lucked out and got someone who worked well with Bekah. However, we won't be going back to that center because there is only one true PT on staff and everyone that does the therasuit therapy with the kids is just people that she hires off the street and trains. There were a couple of PT students too. Two or three of the girls were really good, but some really didn't know how to work with the kids at all. Those girls were always assigned to the kids whose parents didn't stay (we stayed every day except one.) So, while we were thrilled with the progress Bekah made (and has made since) we will choose another option this summer.

Bekah has made amazing progress since she did the therasuit therapy though. When we took her, the only mobility she had was scooting on her bottom. She began crawling in July, walking with a KidWalk in September and is now walking with a Kaye reverse walker. It has not been steady, upward progress, she has had stops & starts, but we are thrilled with where she is right now.

I will add too that I don't credit Therasuit with all of her progress. We enrolled her at a local therapy center where she does listening therapy, aquatic therapy and other OT work. She goes for 2-3 hours, twice a week. They are really good with her and she loves it. Rarely cries there and she is doing so well.

Sorry to ramble, it is late. Mary, I would love to hear how Devon does.

Hi newmothermary,

My DS is 2.5 years and has cerebral palsy spastic diplegia. He has a diagnosis since it showed up on his brain MRI. He's pretty mild and has been an independent walker since 1.5 years old.

Thanks for your info about leapsanbounds. We are going there for an assessment on Saturday. I'm so torn after reading your message though since we found a lady only 30 min drive from our home in the Hudson Valley who also does Therasuit and she was great with my son. But she did admit that Therasuit isn't her main thing and that she only does it a few times a year. I'm sure leapsandbounds have a lot more experience but they are about an hours drive away. I guess I will have to see what therapist they assign to us and if my son gets along with him/her.

Amy is amazing!  She works at Keep Moving Forward Inc.  It is an intensive therasuit clinic in long island.  My son had amazing results.  They focus on functional mobility and incorporate all those motor planning things you want the child to do at home and school.  The website is www.keepmovingforward.info or I think you can find them on facebook.  There is also another therapist named Erica there who is also fabulous.  You will really like them both and the facility.  Good luck in your quest!
