Help w/ Getting rid of stink in someone else's diapers...

I have a GREAT friend who GENEROUSLY passes me all her diapering supplies after her DD grows out of them. From her I have gotten probably 75-80% of my diapering stash. She wants them back of course, but she is obviously saving me sooo much time, hassle, money, etc.

BUT she recently gave me a new pile of prefolds, the next size up, and I have been using them only at night to bulk up DD. I am in night 4 of this and every single morning, DDs diapers REEEEEK with a very strong rancid urine-type smell. This is a totally new issue that I've only noticed with the newly passed down prefolds.

I know my friend just moved into a new, older house, so I'm thinking maybe it's her water; I also know she is not as obsessive as I am about things being clean (she's very into the "dirt and body odor is natural" sort of way of life). She would never ever use bleach or any kind of harsh, non-eco cleaner on anything she owns.

So. If these diapers were mine, I would do a one-time bleach to strip them, just because the smell is SO bad that I'm convinced they are in dire need of some kind of deep cleaning. But I can't use bleach because A) they're her diapers and that would not be cool with her, and B) they are unbleached anyway, so I would be worried that the bleach would discolor them, which would not be cool to do to her diapers either.

Can anyone suggest a eco-friendly, non-toxic, non-discoloring way I can try and strip these prefolds to get rid of the stink?

Also, I hesitate to ask my friend about it b/c I can't think of a way to approach it that wouldn't sound like "you must not be washing your diapers correctly"...so I'd rather just not ask her about it at all if possible.

Thanks

Possible boiling? That wouldn't hurt them any... but it can be very time consuming! If you only had to do it once though it would be worth it.

What about a strip with dawn? (would that be cool with your friend?) Follow with lots of rinsing then drying in the sun.
