SHE'S HERE!!!!!

Baby Claudia Charles ****man was born on march 14 @ 6:37 pm, 8lbs 6oz, 21 1/4 inches...vaginally and non-induced

First the good:

I officially LOVE giving birth. I did end up going with the epidural, but I made it to about 7 cm w/o it, and that was after about 34 hours of unmedicated labor, so I feel like I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish there

I'll post the full story in a BA when I get a chance.

And now the bad. We JUST got to bring her home last night. They whisked her off to the NICU right after she was born for fluid in her lungs. That cleared up by the next night, but then they kept her because she wasn't eating enough to conincide with their charts that say what a baby of her size should be eating. Does 60cc every 3 hours sound like a lot to you guys? Also, she actually gained weight in the first 3 days of life, so I'm not sure what more they wanted of her!

Anyway, all is good now that she's home. I just wish my milk would come in good so that we can get her off of this wretched formula! Pumping as I type, lol!

Much congratulations mama! :::

That bfing stuff is a bunch of BS...hospitals are so notorius for just effing up the natural processs of things...This is one of the things that frustrates us breastfeeding advocates so much. The formula is so unnecessary! but they freek out over these things if baby doesn't fit into their box of normal...which who even knows what normal is anymore when most moms in the hospital are NOT bfing exclusively from the get go anyways. Normal? What the heck is normal? They surely don't know what normal is, thats all I know. The baby's stomach in the first few days is the size of a marble...NOT meant to ingest bottles of milk! Meant to ingest very small but frequent amounts of colostrum helping to clean out their intestines, not clog up with hard to digest cow's milk! Agh. All I gotta say is Breastfeeding works. Nurse your baby. On demand. Don't worry and stop the bottles asap if you want your milk to come in based on her needs. I wish hospitals didn't mess with baby and mom's intuitive way of developing their own feeding patterns - sorry that all happened for you but happy you got your non induced labor. It sounds like my first labor with ds, and I was happy to have labored naturally for over two days straight and even though I ended with an epid at 7-8 cm, he came out right after that so I felt like I still got a fairly natural experience...Good luck with everything - trust your instincts!!!

Congrats!! Keep us the nursing and do not hesitate to call a lactation consultant if you need help getting off the formula. I had issues nursing my first and I so wish I would have sought help. It ended up fine with us nursing for over a year but I wish I could have those first few weeks back and not have stressed so much. :

Yay! Congrats on your new little one. The days after we got home were some of the happiest of my life :

Sorry about your NICU experience. I'm still dealing with disappointment and anger that they took my perfect little girl from me after birth (they said she had tachycardia/fast heartbeat; I now know she didn't have a dangerously high rate). Then began the progression of interventions. They put her on an IV and gave her antibiotics - why? Because she was early and they "didn't know the cause". Then IV sugar water, for no apparent reason. Then the next day she'd lost 'too much weight' (probably because they had flooded her system with water) and the forced formula feeding began. But they were only insisting on 30cc every 3 hrs, plus breastmilk if I wanted to, though you could tell they didn't think that was real food for babies . We had to break her out of the NICU basically by force.

So yeah, 60cc every 3 is totally ridiculous. New babies are only supposed to be getting colostrum at that age, and it isn't much.

Anyway, glad you're home and happy and well. Enjoy this precious time.

Thank you guys, can't wait to have a few minutes to write out a real birth story!

I consider my planned home/hospital L&D story a positive one, and we need more of those on this forum
