After years of being unable to stand anything between my toes, I bought a pair of cute flip flops at Target last year, and LOVED them. They were just a scootch too small though, so this year I bought another pair in the size up. I can't wait to wear them this year. They are a soft, supple rubber that I can bend in half with one hand (that is my ultimate standard for shoes for the kids...except snow boots obviously...I hav eot be able to bend them with one hand), not that awful stiff foam stuff that makes you clunk around like Frankenstein. They had them in kid sizes too as I recall...
PS - I have on again/off again problems with plantar fasciitis in both feet (for over a decade now), and they seem to act up most when I wear more structured/constrictive shoes. When I'm barefoot around the house I have ZERO problems...but when I wear stiff soled shoes and walk around for a bit, it's horrible. What I wind up doing is wearing one pair of insoles in sneakers, and 2 pair inside my winter boots, and that seems to ameliorate it.
