She has been reading comics books like Calvin and Hobbes, Fox Trot and Get Fuzzy, but has read them all so much she's getting bored. SHe reads on par with BoxCar Children, Disney Fairies and such to give you an idea. Thanks!

You could try Bone.

I teach fourth grade, and my kids love it.

"Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery" by James Howe. If she likes it, there are other books in the series (The Celery Stalks at Midnight & Howliday Inn, possibly others). The first time I read this book (I was 9 or 10 - I can't remember how it compares to Boxcar Children reading-level-wise, but I think my younger brother was the one who actually checked it out, so you should be safe) I was literally laughing out loud so hard I had tears in my eyes, and had to take breaks to get my breath back.

What about Roald Dahl? The Twits, The BFG, Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc. and later Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach.

Captain Underpants!!

Soup (and subsequent Soup follow ups) by Robert Newton Peck are full of mischief and hilarity. We're reading them as a family each night, but they are short and sooooo funny!

That's what I was going to suggest. I think if she likes slightly twisted humor, a la Calvin and Hobbes, she would really like Roald Dahl's stuff.

I agree with the rest and wanted to add the Geronimo Stilton series and, maybe, Junie B. Jones (I'm not a fan but a lot of kids like them).

Thank you all for some great suggestions! I tried getting her to read Ronald Dahl a year or two ago, but she gets a little shy about new books and they weren't appealing to her then. I'll definitely try again. There are others suggested that I have never heard of, so I appreciate the suggestions. We will definitely be having some fun at the library soon!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a hit around here.

my dd (8yo also) likes junie b. jones and laughs out loud while she's reading. i have read one or two and i find junie b. to be bratty and kind of awful but i think it keeps dd interested b/c the character is SO different from her and she maybe wonders what its like to be that way....i dunno. she reads them in under a day so i am not really worried about any lasting impressions.....

she also likes the judy moody series. similar to junie b but judy is nicer.

also since your dd likes comics maybe try garfield. we got dd several of the garfield collections and she thinks they are great. i used to love them as a kid but now.......yikes - who has kept jim davis employed all these years???? seriously not funny - no offense to my 8yo

calvin and hobbes is still a little bit over her head (lots of bigger words and the humor is slightly more mature than she is) but i am looking forward to her picking these up and giving them another try. i still love them and i'm 38!

She loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid and has them all including the journal. Great books!!

She also likes Junie B. Jones, but likes Judy Moody much better. The JM books are expecially good as an audiobook.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

I'm totally seconding Roald Dahl and the Bunnicula books. My dd1 has read all of them so many times. The Phantom Tollbooth is another very funny book that dd loves. For quick, fluffy, reads, Geronimo Stilton is very popular.

I agree with the pp's suggestions, especially Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Judy Moody, and the Bunnicula books.

Other ones that I'd recommend are:
The Penderwicks and The Penderwicks on Gardham Street
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and its sequels by Judy Blume
The Pain and the Great One and the sequel by Judy Blume
The Ramona books by Beverly Cleary
Henry Huggins and Ribsy by Beverly Cleary
Stink and its sequels (about Judy Moody's little brother)
Down Girl and Sit, Smarter than Squirrels and the sequel

My 8 yo laughed out loud at all of these.

When I was that age I loved Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary. I can't really remember much about them now. Although, recently I was thinking about that whole "eat it or wear it" episode. That's not very nice!

My dd has really enjoyed the Bunnicula books as well. She would also recommend Clementine, The Talented Clementine & Clementine's Letter by Sara Pennypacker.

I second Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume. I would add Frecklejuice to the list. And of course Roald Dahl (especially the Twits).
