Any thoughts on Menopur?

I am going to be doing my first only injectables iui this month. The nurse said that they would be starting me out on menopur. Does anyone have any good stories relating to that med? How many follies did you make?

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I conceived DD on my first round of menopur (with and IUI). It took 21 days of injections. But she's here. I got 5 follies, but 2 were a little small.
I'm TTC #2 and I'm currently on my 2nd round of menopur, this time insurance only covers 50% so it's really expensive, but that's neither here nor there. Last time I had 5 follies, they've really increased my dosage and I had my IUI after 8ish days of injections. Now I am on 3 vials a day again, for a week, I have a blood test on Sunday and hopefully this will be a better cycle. Oh and after last cycle I ended up with a huge cyst so I had to miss a month. Apparently this is common.
It also makes me crazy hormonal and so pissy, worse than when I am pregnant.
It's hard on me, but I keep telling myself that there is a great reward.

Also from what I know of it, the best chance of conception is on the first round. There is a limited number of times you can use it. There is no relation to ovarian cancer from taking it. The needles are really small, I swear I can't feel them, even though I give them to myself.

Menopur is really expensive. Even with my great RX coverage it cost me $200 for a single cycle. My body responded really well to it, I only needed a few days of shots - less even than Clomid. It does require a lot of monitoring though, which is also pricey.

I really didn't notice any more side effects with it than I did with Clomid, but I did wind up with 3 follies.

I'm jealous! only $200 for a single cycle... sigh I'm over $1000 for this one right now... I hope it works out for you! :

I got pregnant after my first Menopur cycle. I don't recall how many mature follicles I had, but it was more than one. Unfortunately, the embryo twinned and I miscarried at 8.5 weeks.

My second cycle (first post-miscarriage) didn't go as well. Only one follicle matured and it took longer and more meds than the first cycle. I didn't get pregnant.

This cycle is going more quickly, but again only one follicle is maturing.

Everyone is different and you may respond really, really well to these meds. I am really glad I am trying it.

I am now going to answer my own question just in case others need some info on the med. I ended up buying 10 vials of Menopur which costed me $630
I only used 7 vials and ended up with almost 9 follies, but the biggest ones were 15mm and 22mm so according to the doc, only the 22mm would ovulate after hcg. No word on if it worked yet or not. Going in for BETA tomorrow. I also had no side effects with the menopur. Clomid made me go nuts!!! Menopur was surprisingly delightful.

If this cycle doesn't work and I save up some more money for IUI then I am going to use it again.

This was my 3rd IVF cycle. The first one did not work, the 2nd one worked, but sadly, I had a stillbirth. Now, onto IVF#3.

In my last IVF cycle, I had 11 eggs, but 8 were not mature.

Menopur was suggested this time around because my eggs were not maturing as they should have. So, I injected this along with Puregon and Orgalutron.

They managed to collect 8 follicles this time, and only 2 were not mature.

Of those eggs, 5 fertilized, 2 implanted, and unfortunately, the 3 remaining eggs did not make it to the frozen stage (something about it had to be at a certain stage).

I have my beta test on Monday...

Menopur is often given to patients who react badly to Repronex, as it tends to have less side effects. I have heard good things about it from patients as well as from doctors.

We usually give it every other month to give the ovaries a rest and avoid cysts like a PP was talking about.
