Snap press maintenance?

I bought a used snap press and am having some problems. I feel like it needs to be oiled or something. When I push the handle down it is really jerky, it doesn't go down smooth at all. Has anyone ever had this problem with an older snap press? Is it possible to oil a snap press?

Also, I'm having a hard time getting the snaps to smoosh together. I push with all my might and nothing happens. And suggestions?

I just got my new snap press (through a coop) and I am having the same problems. Putting on snaps is pretty irritating so far. I'd like to get some answers too.

yes, oil your presses (although "grease" might be better)! Then be *really* careful with them as the oil can very easily leak onto whatever you are snapping. It will make a big difference.

Yes, eventually I oiled the snap press and it did make a big difference. Now when I press on it, it goes down smoothly.

I still am having problems getting my snaps to stay together. I wonder if it is because I got a used press with a bunch of snaps and nothing is labeled, so maybe I am trying to put the wrong sizes together?
