Hello, I usually am on the diaper boards, but here recently I have been reading here. I am moving to Northern Ca and am interested in homeschooling. If anyone can offer any advice on good books to read before I start, I would appreciate. Actually any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated. I was wondering if anyone belongs to a support group in Northern CA. TIA

Where in Northern California? I run an elist in the Yolo County area (Davis) and know about groups in Sac and the bay area...

John Holt is a good read. His later books, I think, are easier reading, but with his earlier books, it's interesting to follow his sort of mental wanderings, to see what he's seeing and thinking and follow along as he comes to new understandings about children and learning. Reading his books in order is reading about his journey...

Home Education Magazine is a good place to read about the different ways families homeschool/unschool.

I also benefitted from reading books by Linda Dobson: Homeschooling: The Early Years, and Homeschooling Success Stories.

When you want information to back up your decision to friends and family members, a good book to have read is: Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense by David Gutterson. He was a public high school English teacher who, along with his wife, homeschooled three sons. It's very well researched and well written too.

I was able to check out all these books from the library.

HTH!

We actually live outside of Dunnigan, so we get to Yuba City and Marysville every few months at least... I do know a homeschooling mom in Live Oak, and she had a pretty good group going in Yuba City/Marysville... if you haven't found them yet, let me know! You could also contact your HSC county contact - http://www.hsc.org.

I'm quoted in one of Linda Dobson's books

Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it. I am also looking to find some support groups. I am going to be in Marysville, CA but anywhere in the Sacramento area would be okay.......I am willing to drive for friends!!

relax! you have plenty of time. Home education begins with you, mama! Head to the library and start reading through whatever they have. It is much easier to find what fits if you have lots of things to choose from. most books have something good to offer. take what you want and leave the rest behind.
