Shampooing question

This doesn't seem like an entirely appropriate place for this question except for the fact that I, a), can't think of a better one and b), it has to do with something someone wrote on another thread here--the one about stockpiling your pantry. So here goes:

I have begun realizing that I shampoo far more often than is necessary, something that I especially understood after listening to an NPR piece this morning that talked about how something like fifty years ago, women washed their hair ONCE A MONTH. Then they interviewed some no-poo (!) women who only used baking soda and vinegar (not gonna go that route myself!) and even then only rarely. Some researchers pointed out that hair only gets greasy after not washing it for a day or two because by overwashing it, we are training our sebaceous glands to overproduce. Okay, so I'm sold: washing my hair too often (which for me is every-other day) is bad for my hair/head, bad (as the mom here on mothering pointed out) for the environment and--hey, yeah--bad for the pocketbook.

But my question is this: for those of you who wash your hair, say, twice a week (my goal)or less--do you get it wet in between? Currently I just tie my hair back and keep it dry on the days I don't wash it. But I wonder if I start going longer if a quick rinse of just plain water will make a difference. Thoughts? TIA!

Sorry I can't offer much advice. We've been no-pooing for a couple of years. However, this morning I read the NPR piece you're referring to and thought I'd link to it for anyone who might be interested:

When It Comes To Shampoo, Less Is More

I wash my hair about once/ twice a week. My hair has never really been oily-- pretty normal. I do not get it wet in between...although I don't think that would necessarily be a problem. I do sort of a combo no-poo and shampoo. My first wash is with some baking soda, and then my second is with a teeny bit of shampoo to help smooth out my hair...shampoo lasts forever around here!

I have a feeling that this thread will be moved very soon to "Natural Body Care" which is just 2 forums down within Natural Living.

Anyways, I shampoo on average every other day. My sclap become itcy if I let it go to the three days.

My problem is thus styling.... I don't know how to go more than the 2 days and not look like a freak when I do leave the house. I don't normally "style" my hair with prodcuts and such, so by the end of day 2 I am a frizzy headed nightmare. I've personally tired almost everything except super expensive salon products.... but anything under $20 I've tried, both natural and unnatural.

When I brush it, it just gets even worse with the frizzy and flyaways. I've tried joboja (sp), coconut and shea butter on my hair as well. Sure they keep "some" of the fly-aways down but after a night of sleeping, I end up with "helmet hair".

As for those that don't wash their hair so often, how do you handle the styling aspect or do you all just have really nice hair to start with? I assume you do shower more often and thus wear a shower cap?

Nope! I wash my hair twice a week or so. Nothing in between. It took a few weeks for my hair to get used to it when I started, 4 years or so ago, and now I constantly get compliments on my hair. I do it to save money on shampoo. I just pull my hair back in a bun when I'm in the shower.

I have been trying to stretch it out for maybe a year now.

I think I just have a really oily scalp. After a year, I still need to shampoo every other day. By the 3rd day my hair looks greasy and gross. I am annoyed!

I do get my hair wet on the mornings I don't shampoo because I have bad bed head. But I don't think it helps the oily-ness.

I've been no-poo-ing for about a year (and contrary to the NPR piece no, you don't smell like a pickle ). I've actually quit the baking soda part, mostly, and only do vinegar, which, let me tell you, makes your hair feel SO lovely, and after you rinse it out and it dries, it doesn't smell AT ALL. I like to put a drop of rosemary essential oil in mine, but sometimes I don't do that either.

Anyway, I do get my hair wet in between, because I have curly/wavy hair and if I don't get it wet, it just looks terrible. Actually, I know of lots of people who only use water on their hair. EVER. There's also a "washcloth method" It takes a couple weeks before your oil glands catch up with your lack of need for extra oil, though.

Anyway, I get my hair wet and scrub my head for a couple minutes then go about the rest of my normal shower routine, by the end of the shower I can tell that the oil from my scalp has moved down my hair shaft, because I can finger comb it fairly easily.

ETA.. I shower every day - my hair gets wet every day. No shower cap here

I've been no-pooing for a couple of weeks, and have good days and bad, but the good days are REALLY GOOD and I think my hair is still adjusting. I have pretty dry hair and am realizing that it only needs the baking soda probably every 3-4 days. In between I do get my hair wet b/c it is curly and I need to get it wet to get the curls round again (they turn into dredy flat things overnight if I don't) when I get it wet I do a thorough scalp massage with a light daily conditioner (not the ones for deep conditioning or anything) or else I will get itchy scalp (but I don't use any shampoo/baking soda) I rinse really well and then I put in a small amt of conditioner, finger comb, and do a super super fast rinse so that some stays in as my hair is so dry and frizzy otherwise - probably for straight hair folks or those that don't have such dry hair, the conditioner would leave you pretty greasy. So basically, I am using light conditioner as a shampoo every couple days then doing the baking soda vinegar only once or twice a week.

Have you tried mixing honey with your baking soda? It moisturizes pretty well. I had to quit because it was making me get a little oily. Just a thought

AnnetteMarie, guess I didn't look very hard, huh! Thank you for moving this, obviously this is the very best place for this inquiry.

Tangled Hill, thanks for linking to the NPR story. How thoughtful!

Juvysen, you know, as I was listening to that story, I was thinking, you know, I bet she *doesn't* smell like pickles, lol! I clean my house with vinegar and I know that the smell evaporates surprisingly quickly.

And thanks everyone else for your input. I'm sure it will take some time and some bad hair before my scalp adjusts but I'm sure it will happen. Especially realizing that our current obsession with daily shampooing is something that was totally sold to us by shampoo companies! It's so obvious when you think about it--of course our heads weren't "made" to require chemical cleansing on a daily (or even a weekly!) basis!

PS-I am also already reconsidering my aversion to using baking soda and vinegar which I indicated in my original post. I just realized that that was a little snotty (and ignorant) to say, sorry if it came across that way! My mom is a hairdresser so I've grown up using a slew of (professional) hair care products; changing my thinking on this stuff is taking some getting used to!

I shampoo every other day and when I don't, I use conditioner. My hair stylist washes her hair once a week, but she's got the kind of style that she can get away with that. So jealous!

i do not shampoo everyday or even o.o day. my skin and hair would freak if i did. but if i want my hair to look good i do get it wet. i soak my hair with water. a thing that has also worked really well for me again a curly haired girl. is a combo of aloevera, jojoba (just a tiny tiny bit) and distilled water in a drip bottle. say a four ounce bottle is three ounces water one ounce aloe and five drops jojoba oil. it works really well in my hair. keeps the fly-aways away.
