my cloth diaper experience after 4 weeks

I just wanted to share how cloth diapering has been going for me, because I'm so happy with it! It's much easier than I imagined it would be, and I don't know why more people don't do it.

Here's what's in our (small for now) stash:
19 infant unbleached 4x8x4 prefolds
6 small Thirsties covers
3 BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers, each with insert and doubler
24 Punkin Butt flannel wipes
6 Kissluvs wipes (used mainly as washcloths)
2 Snappis (never used)

I bought the prefolds off craigslist, so not only did I save money, I didn't have to do any prepping. I'm going to buy another dozen from another person on craigslist soon. But even with just 19, we've been able to do laundry every other day.

Bought the Thirsties covers from My Baby Pumpkin at http://www.mybabypumpkin.com/ (also bought 3 in medium size, for later, because they had a great sale going on). Bought the BG3 and wipes from our local birth center baby boutique.

We use prefolds all day, and BG3 just at night. 6 covers have been more than enough for us.

Right now, we're keeping dirty diapers in a plastic shopping bag hung from the doorknob of the nursery. Haven't had any smell issues at all. I have ordered two large custom wet bags (20"x20") from SMJAE at http://hyenacart.com/SMJAE/ and hope to get them soon to replace the temporary plastic bags.

For on the road, we're again using plastic bags temporarily (I have a bunch on a roll that I got as a shower gift), but are waiting on two smaller wet bags from SMJAE as well. No problems so far having to change cloth diapers during outings.

Like I said, we do laundry every other day. All we're doing right now is rinsing in plain cold water, washing in hot/cold with Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin, and drying on medium heat. Covers get hung to dry. There are some poop stains that I need to try to get out in the sun, but other than that have not had any problems.

When we were using disposables, the poop would almost always escape the diaper, because DD doesn't poop every day and thus has massive ones. But we have not had a single blowout in the cloth diapers. Yes, the poop almost always gets off the prefold and onto the cover, but never out of the cover. And prefolds absorb the poop much better, instead of having it sit on top of the disposable diaper in a puddle, so DD's bottom stays cleaner.

We've had pee leaks only a couple times, pretty much always our fault. The first time was with the BG3 overnight, and it happened on the side because she was laying on her side to nurse in bed with me. So we now stuff the doubler up inside the front of the diaper sideways, so she has more coverage on the side, and we haven't had that problem since.

So happy to hear all is going well for you! It's especially nice for other newbies because so often the only posts here are when people are having trouble. I think it can freak out those considering cloth! It's not that tons of people have trouble, just that not many people post when everything is going great. So - kudos!
