I want to get rid of my blinds

I've got my kids rooms as un-plasticized, unchemicalized as I can possibley get them. But then I have pull down blinds. So I'm thinking I can just remove the existing blind and use the wooden roller contraption to make a better blind.

Has anyone done this? What do I do? Just find some heavy material the same width and staple it to the wooden roller? What kind of material would work best?

I have this book and it has directions on how to make blinds. Maybe you could find it at your library?

I found a neat link showing how to make Roman shades out of mini blinds:

I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty neat.
It still has a few pieces of the original blind in it, but it's not visible or accessible.

I was going to suggest a Roman shade too. I like her way of making it. It seems really easy. I might have to do that.
