cow with mastitis

I was at my local dairy farm and one of the cows has mastitis. The farm is newly organic and doesn't know much at how to treat it except with an oregano oil injection for days which is costly. What do you do naturally for a cow that has mastitis?

I've heard garlic can work. Maybe they can try this site for ideas?

The state of Maine used to have a list of all approved organic mastitis treatments, I can't seem to find it currently - but it was a god resource for ideas

I have used the homeopathic remedy Phytolacca with great success for my Jersey when she had mastitis a few years ago.

There's a treatment based on peppermint oil you can use in addition to milking out...I can't remember what it's called. I'll see if I can find out.

I have a cow that is prone to it (she has a blind quarter after an injury years ago) BEFORE she has her calf we make sure to give her good mineral suppluments, and 4-6000 units of vitamine C daily. Once she has the calf then the calf is put on immediatly - even if it means restraining the cow (although this one is as gentle as they come) then once the calf is done as it wants milk the udder out completly (save and freeze the colostrum) then 3-4 times a day milk the cow, this is in addition to what the calf is nursing (be sure though that the calf is getting enough - if not supplement with a bottle of the milk you have taken) I always put calf on first - then finish the job by hand
Milk the cow by hand - NOT WITH A MILKING MACHINE - they don't get it all out and can cause damage. When you start and when you are done massasge the udder with an udder balm (generaly a salve with methanol, eucoliptus, O of O and pepermint oils) this helps reduce inflamation. As far as more invasive treatments - injectable vitamine C works fast, but must be given twice a day. Also homiopathic anti inflamitories, and the old standby - asperin boluses (asperin is allowed in organic production to treat for pain and inflamation)

* give 1/2 cup of aloe juice with her grain twice a day (I do this preventivley after calving)
* rub dynamint udder cream after milking
* milk as many times a day as possible
* vaginaly give her CEG tincture (cayenne, echinacea, garlic) from lancanster ag. It is amazing for extreme infections.
* I also have treated mastitis with pulsatilla and other remedies dowsing(sp?) works great with cows to find the best remedy

I am sure I have forgotten some things but hope that helps
