Scarry's What Do People Do All Day

We've been looking for the older, unabridged version of this book and can't find it! My husband remembers this book from childhood, as do some other parents I know. Does anyone have the "uncut edition?" Is it worth looking for or will the one I can get from B&N be a close second?

I didn't realize there were two versions, but I found one on ebay for my son for like $8 with shipping. This was one of my favorite childhood books.

now i want to read it!

The current version is definitely worth buying - my three kids all loved it.

We got the new version and it was for sure a little more PC than the old, which we found later at a used book store. I still like the old one better, it is a bit longer, but has things that are not so *okay* anymore.

My aunt has a copy of the old one, which my sister told me about after she saw it. It has a housewife in it, who gets money from "daddy". (accurate for my life right now!) There were other 'questionable' entries, too. She got the book for my boys for their birthday, but they got a new (abridged, p.c. )version as the origional versions were very expensive.

They love it.

I put this on my hold list when I saw this thread and I just adore it! Thanks for the tip.

I loved Richard Scarry's books when I was a child. We found the older version of what people do all day at the thrift shop.

Oh, lucky you, BookGoddess! Wish I could find one for a reasonable price. Only one I've found so far was $375! I'll have to skip the expurgated stories for that amount!

I have a copy of a couple of his books that my mom kept from my childhood. Didn't even know there was a new version. Be kind of interesting to see what the differences are.

You all might be interested in this Richard Scarry Flickr set I found awhile back:

Someone compared pages of the 1963 original version of "The Best Word Book Ever" to the 1991 (and current) more PC version. It's pretty interesting!

My dd LOVES Richard Scarry, particularly "What do People do All Day?". Great stuff. The collector in me would really love to own the original versions, and the artist in me thinks it's sad that they changed Richard Scarry's work. But the mother in me is glad they took the super rigid/gendered stuff out.

(busily gets ready to post original, in-fairly-good-shape Richard Scarry books on ebay.....).

Okay, maybe not, but $375?!!! It's good to know in case DH doesn't get paid again for a couple weeks!!!! I have five original Scarry books in decent shape. I LOVED them as a kid and never got rid of them as an adult.

Yes, I've looked there, too. As far as I can tell (I could be wrong), anything published from 1979 on was abridged. Were the cut stories really that bad? One reviewer on Amazon says they really miss them in the abridged version. As does a friend in town.

We have the older version. Ya know, it's quite easy to edit while reading. I routinely change pronouns from he to she to balance things up in Scarryland. I made Farmer Alfalfa a female, as well as Sawdust the carpenter and a couple of the firefighters.

My husband has looked for this for awhile now, and just couldn't find it. He could only find "chopped up" versions, he said. But his mom has 40 year old copies that she won't give to him.
