gDiapers as cloth diapers?

So I started off with pampers, lived and learned and got luvs, still had the sinking guilty feeling every time I threw a diaper away, was intimidated by the upfront cost and time involved with cloth diapering, and bought gDiapers. My question is: can I use the plain old cloth diaper prefolds in them (it sure seems like they'd fit but would they work?) and how do I go about doing so? I have never used cloth diapers for actual diapering! Help me out!

I thought gDiapers were a cloth cover/outer layer with a disposable & biodegradable insert?

I have only used the older style gdiapers that had a waterproof layer on the actual cover, and when i used them i used prefolds with them.

I know alot of mamas that use the Gdiapers and then just make their own inserts to put in the liners, or you could use folded up infant prefolds.

yes it does work

I've not used gDiapers myself, but a good friend does and she uses them exactly how you are describing.... she puts a cloth prefold in the cover and has been doing this for over a year. She doesn't seem to have any problems with doing it this way. She doesn't use the actual gDiapers inserts at all. She uses sposies (7Gen) at night. hth

I think g covers with a prefold is a good combo.

I found g-diapers with a prefold too bulky....maybe I was using the wrong size prefold? I really like using my gdiapers with a FB insert with a fleece liner overtop.

How about fitteds w/a gdipe over as a cover? My thought the fitted may fit better than prefolds- litlle less bulk. I used Nicky's covers w/fitted and prefolds on my ds- same concept right? But I did feel the fitteds were less bulky under the nicky's.

It's kind of complicated because the cover itself is not actually waterproof (well...urine proof), you have to snap in a plastic liner, but the plastic liner doesn't cover the whole diaper unless it has something inside of it holding out over the inside of the diaper. Sorry....I'm not really sure if that made sense!

Thanks for the input. Because I am concerned about spending extra $$ I'm gonna go ahead and try stuffing the folded up prefold in the liner... I can't see how it could be much bulkier than the flushable insert... Then maybe I can get doublers for nighttime if needed? The flushables have worked out okay, no leaks, no rash, and they hold up overnight.... but I want to give the CD a go... Wish me luck on my first foray into cloth diapering!!

It works great! Just fold the prefold so it makes a nice rectangle and place it in the liner. We have to fold over one end, but with a boy heavy wetter we fold it over in the front and it works great.

Once you have the pf in there you can treat it like a sposie or AIO, just stick a couple in your diaper bag. When wet I just pull out the pf to put in my wet bag and stick the cover (if not soiled) back in the diaper bag.

They don't work for overnight, though... 4 hours MAX and then they leak.

Make sure to stretch the liner out lengthwise so that your pf insert is as long as it can be, if that makes sense. That seems to be the trick to avoid leaks. Then, when the cover is fastened to a quick peek to check that the cover is all the way over the liner (if it's pinched at the legs or waist it will leak) and that the pf is all the way in the liner (anything peeking out will leak too). We use both old style and new style covers.
