where do you get paleo / grain-free meal ideas?

I'm starting to experiment with grain-free/paleo type meals (not sure how strict we'll be), and I know there are zillions of tasty recipes that should fit into this category, but I don't know where to find them. Anyone have recommendations for books, websites, blogs, anything else?

Thanks!

Hey there!

Congrats on finding out about paleo! How did you learn about it? I've been on/off the diet for several years, and decidedly feel MUCH, MUCH better ON the diet. Actually, more of a lifestyle change than diet.

Some general recommendations are to just adapt any recipe to eliminate grains (fairly easy to do), make sure to have plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, nut butters, eggs and meats around, and to look through low-carb recipes.

Here are some of my current favorites:

-Cookbook: Eating Stella Style (more of a low-carb book, but his recipes are AWESOME and fairly easy)

-Blog: proteinpower.com. Dr. Eades is a brilliant, thoughtful man, and I really like reading his take on all the literature and studies that are out there. Again, he is more of a low-carb than paleo person, but I know after reading his blog that he believes that the paleo diet is best.

-Books: Protein Power Lifeplan, Neanderthin, the Paleo Diet

These are just a few off the top of my head. Personally, the paleo diet is more like a continuum for me. I don't eat perfect all the time, and I add things like dairy because I tolerate it well and, well, l love cheese. But focusing on meats (grassfed if possible), veggies, some fruits, nuts, and eggs will provide you with a very, very nutritious diet.

Hey there, paleo mama here.

My favorite sites are:

www.cavemanfood.blogspot.com

All of her recipes are delicious. Search for the squash souffle. We had that for breakfast with sausage and spinach this morning. Delish.

www.nikkisblogspot.com

I think her last post talks about how to make Paleo eating manageable. Her cookbooks are fantastic, too. I have both of them.

www.marksdailyapple.com

He's featuring organ meats on his site right now. Inspired me to get some lamb kidneys at the farmer's market this week.

Search the TF forum for grain free threads. Any advice written by ChristieB is fantastic.

I'm interested in starting a "Modern Paleo Eaters" thread but I just don't know where to put it. We could talk about lots of stuff...favorite recipes, eating seasonally, how to be efficient with time, etc...

I'll come back with some more suggestions later. My son needs some help downstairs...

I also love the caveman food blog! We're not paleo (but I'm considering heading that direction).

Thank you both for the ideas.

FF--thank you for the suggestions. I think this will be part of a slow transition into either SCD or GAPS which I think will be beneficial for my husband. But we need to do things slowly and gradually around here. I'll check out those books, my collection of cookbooks is a bit thin in this genre. My biggest problem right now is actual interesting ideas, our meals have fallen into a rut and even I'm bored.

SuzukiAustin-thanks for the blogs, I will check them out and try to start putting together a few breakfast and dinner ideas to try.

A thread is an interesting idea, but I wouldn't be a good one to look to for new ideas and suggestions, I'm too new. But I'd lurk and ask questions.

A good book for paleo recipe ideas is The Garden of Eating by Rachel Matesz:

It's a grain and dairy free cookbook with a section of menu plans.

Good luck with your Paleo adventure!

Hi, I'm a paleo mama too....and my hubby just made the switch as well. My favorite site is the active lowcarber forum (the paleo/neanderthin section). Also a really great recipe site: http://www.paleofood.com/

I have to fess up--a year and a half ago I purchased The Garden of Eating, because I wanted something for ideas with no gluten and no dairy, and I heard great things about the book. Well, life got busy and it was all I could do for quite a while to just get food on the table, let alone actually try new recipes (think boring, repetitive gluten/dairy-free stuff), so The Garden of Eating sat, alone, on the shelf. I guess it's a good time to actually open it and try some recipes.

Karlin, thanks for the link, I will check it out.

I went to the library and checked out a TON of low-carb cookbooks. I had to sort through and see which ones fit with paleo and which were more Atkins, but this has been my best resource. My favorite book is Grain Free Gourmet. I copied about every recipe in that book!
Mark's Daily Apple is fantastic!

We're still in the slow transition, but I'm doing better all the time (in terms of meal ideas and keeping food around). But we've been gluten and dairy free for almost 2 years now, and the kids and I have done well with that. This is for my DH, and I think, even if this is the right way (and I really think it'll be at least helpful, even if it's not everything), it'll take a while for him to feel better. I've wondered if he'd do better low-carb as well, but that seems a lot harder (right now I'm not focusing on carbs) and I want to give myself some time to do this well and get a nice repertoire going.

Just on the tastiness front, I am pleased. We're eating good new food, and more veggies that I don't use much, which is good for all of us, and it feels good (from the variety standpoint, not strictly from the feeling-healthier standpoint).

And I have to confess, I am leaning on potatoes a bit more than I should. I think getting rid of the grains will be helpful, but for ease of cooking, well, we've done potatoes, though I've also been figuring out how to cut out eggs just recently, since I think he's having issues with eggs as well. I just want to reduce some stress on his body for a while, eventually I think we'll get a lot of these foods back.

I can say that I still sometimes long for things with gluten and dairy, and they were really messing with me. Figuring out meals (even better, snacks, since losing cheese as a snack was tough for a while) and doing the hard work to cut it out could be really helpful. I don't have this type of craving for most foods we eat now, but homemade wheat bread, and a piece of cheese, I still want them. Not all the time, not horribly, mostly when I'm stressed or feeling rundown. But I've found the benefits to be worth it.

I really think that rather than depending on "recipes" while making the transition, it's easiest on your body to rely on simple whole foods. It's far too easy to become reliant on fancy recipes, IMO.

Get through the transition first, and then slowly start adding in "replacement" foods if you like. I know many people who have a lot of trouble with control around those replacements, and it can be self-defeating.

Write up a list of the allowed foods that you like, and work on combining them in their simplest forms. If you concentrate on what you can eat, it's much easier to get through the transition than concentrating on what you can't.

What great sites! We are dairy and gluten free (aside from goat yogurt/kefir for the kids) and my middle child doesn't tolerate *ANY* grains except corn. We do eat potatoes, corn and beans, but otherwise those recipes look AWESOME! Most of the typical gluten free fare doesn't work in this household since we try to avoid rice, etc. because it is too much of a pain to cook separate meals. We follow a semi-NT style diet so those sites are perfect for us. Thanks so much! :

I really like these 2 blogs. Neither are perfect paleo- but will give you a starting point. First is gf low carb no sugar- with a tf slant, the next is gf scd'ish. The first has a recipe for all natural gf/cf low sugar creme eggs and oh my goodness if I hadn't just given up sugar again I would be making those! As for menu ideas I usually would just think of what I usually like to eat and then adjust them.

for instance:
stir fry- curry- etc- served over slightly steamed cauliflower grated- super yummy!
spaghetti- use spaghetti squash or serve over other veggie noodles or I like it over sauteed peppers and onions
meatloaf- add appropriate veggies and voila'
roast and veggies
all manner of soups w/ chicken and veggies
hamburgers and sandwiches serve on lettuce buns

Also- I have varied how strict I am as well trying to find the balance of feeling the best and eating the most variety. I find I am fine w/ potatoes- also I feel ok w/ rice and quinoa- whole grains- but not really if they are flours. Sugar is totally not my friend though. However, I try to keep those grains to a minimum- preferably maybe a couple of times a month seems to work best-

oh- on breakfast I find I work best w/ a combo of meat and veggie. For a long time I did sausage and broccoli- mixed veggie stir fry and vegetable juice. I also like sweet potatoes w/ nuts and cinnamon- (no sugar) w/ some bacon and sausage. I did drink lots of smoothies but I have a hard time w/ them not getting too sweet for me.

My fave is allrecipes.com

I just do searches for meat based dishes. I love that they have reviews and ratings for their recipes and I can adjust the dishes if need be.
