How do I transport my 2 year old?

So here's the situation:

We don't have a car and walk about 98% of the time. We sometimes have to use the train or bus. DD is mostly in her stroller, a BOB, which I love. When she is in a carrier, we use the Kozy. Lately though, it's been killing my back, even on the shortest of trips. It's more comfortable to wear her on my back, but I seldom have the chance to do that. We live in Boston, so we're both bundled a good chunk of the year and I cannot get her comfortably on my back when we're both wearing all of those layers. The things is, it's a royal PITA to take the BOB on the train, and it's impossible to take it on the bus. I was looking into getting an umbrella stroller for those outings, but after looking into that, I'm having second thoughts. It seems that the cheap ones get bad reviews and I don't want to pay for an expensive one.

My questions: Are there some carriers that really are better for toddlers? I've been looking at the Beco and Patapum (sp?), and I'm even wondering if I should consider using a wrap. I just don't want to spend the money only to find that babywearing hurts my back no matter what. If you use the Kozy, did you find you had to switch to something else at a certain point? Oh, and FTR, DD is only about 26 pounds, but she's 3 feet tall. I have a weird body- short waist and torso, narrow shoulders, but I'm definitely not slim.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated, even if the advice is to give up on wearing her, but hopefully that won't have to be the case. TIA!

There's a good babywearing group in Boston area...maybe go to meeting and try out some of the carriers there? It'd be a great chance to try out carriers to see if they work for you before buying.

I find the Beco to be really easy to use for back-carries....even *with* a lot of layers on...because it has the inside panel. I can put my baby inside the carrier, pull the back panel all the way up (and tuck his coat/jacket down), pull the straps over his shoulders (get him all situated..so he is sitting deep down in the carrier) and then put him on my back. I find the inside panel makes things much easier....I was never able to get a really good back carry wtih the ergo or kozy...if we were wearing layers...but I *can* with the beco.

I had considered this, but they typically meet in places that are pretty difficult for me to get to w/out a car.

Good to know. Is the panel just for infants though? Off to pore over their site again...

We bought a toddler patapum to replace our ergo a couple of months ago and I find it more comfortable for back carries now as I can use the extra straps to fasten it so DS is pulled closer to me. I do find it a bit more difficult than the ergo to put on though because of the extra straps. We are now starting to go without winter coats here so that helps a lot.

No...I have the "old" beco (the 1.0). It has two panels...one which is the 'infant' insert...and is positioned higher up. When I put my 12-month old in it...I simply lay the infant panel flat against the back. Then there is the regular inside panel, which I "step" him inside of. In the "new" beco's the infant insert is removable. So, there are 2 panels...the infant one can be used or not (and laid flat again the back in the old, or removed completely in the new)
