Checking titers before deciding to do shots

About how much does this procedure cost? From what I understand, it is not very expensive, but I'd like to get my girls' titers checked for each disease at their upcoming pediatrician appointment (they haven't been to a doctor's check up in over 3 years! )

Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg?

What sort of response should I expect from the ped? Should I call ahead and warn them that I'll be requesting this test?

In Mississippi, if a child can prove immunity to the diseases, then the shots do not have to be given (except for DTaP, for some reason they won't accept titers for this one.) If my five year old demonstrates adequate immunity to all of the diseases, then she can attend a montesori school that I've been eyeing (if we decide to go ahead with the one shot.)

It's a simple blood test, so I doubt it would be all that expensive, but since you will be checking multiple titres, it may cost a bit.

You may get grief from your ped but who cares. If you are willing to pay for the tests there is no reason they shouldn't honor your request. I don't think you would need to call ahead, but you can if you want to.

I would definitely call ahead to get a lab request to have it done BEFORE the appt. Then, you will have the results right there for your ped to see and discuss any vax you may want to get that day.
