Aluminum Toxicity - Page 4

Human and animal studies have investigated the aluminum retention in the body. Within the first day of receiving a single injection of 26Al citrate, approximately 59% of the dose was excreted in the urine of six
subjects; 72 and 1.2% was excreted in the urine and feces, respectively, during the first 5 days (Talbot et al. 1995). At the end of 5 days, it was estimated that 27% of the dose was retained in the body (Priest et
al. 1995; Talbot et al. 1995). When 26 Al levels were monitored more than 3 years after a single subject received the injection, a half-life of approximately 7 years was calculated (Priest et al. 1995). However,
when the subject was re-examined approximately 10 years after the injection, a half-life of about 50 years
was estimated (Priest 2004).

Interesting. There are contradictory aspects to the two results. However, running some numbers......

Given that an adult (I don't have figures for a child) ingests 7-9mg of aluminium per day, and somebody previously stated that 0.1% was absorbed into the blood stream we can work out what the level of aluminium will be if that 50 year half life is true.

A 50 year half life means that each day your aluminium level is about 0.986233 the level it was yesterdat + anything absorbed today. That gives us a stable amount of aluminium of .5mg-.65mg. This level builds up over the first year and then remains stable.

If you drop 0.85mg of aluminium into your blood stream (which I understand is the maximum allowed) then the level goes up to about 2.5x normal and drops back down over the course of a year.

If the 7 year half life is true, then you get a stable aluminium level of 0.074-0.095mg achieved in about a month. An injection of .85mg of aluminium raises the level to 10x above normal and it returns to normal in about a month and a half.

A 50 year half life and adults ingest 7-9mg of aluminium per day. It has been previously stated that 0.1% of that is absorbed into the blood stream. OK. So that's .007-0.009mg of aluminium per day.

There are a whole load of problems with the above. Adult figures instead of children being one, the aluminium trickling into the blood stream from the muscle tissue being another. I thought it might be interesting though to try to see what the implication of the studies kiara7 presented might be. The reassuring side of it seems to be that aluminium levels tend to a stable level relatively rapidly even with a 50 year half life. The more you put in, the faster you pee it out. Obviously there are sides to it that are not so reassuring... in the tradition of such things, I call for more studies!

Oh! %$*&ÂŁ I realized I made a hash of my sums. For the sake of my wounded pride, I'm going to go off and do them again.

If I moved house to a region with a little bit more aluminium in the tap water would that have more, or less of an impact on the aluminium in my blood? I don't know what the figures are here, so I don't know whether to be woried or not.
See, that would freak me out. Given the Alzheimer's connection with aluminum, unless they could trace that aluminum leaving my body, I'd think it settled into my brain tissue.
