I'm a soon to be first time mom and new to cloth diapering so I want simple and low maintenance to start with. Let me know if you all think I need anything else.

2 dozen prefolds (want to get another dozen or 2)
2 snappis
6 size 0 Kissaluvs
1 medium all in 2 thingy from a friend
1 dozen washcloths (for wipes but planning on getting more)
4 Bummis size small covers
2 Bummis newborn covers (want to get more of these)
6 BumGenius One size 3.0

I'm also planning on getting some Thirsties covers and maybe their fitteds as well. I also want to try Fuzzi Bunz. What do you think??

what size prefolds? I would get some regulars for after the infant size my dd is growing out of the infant ones already at 5 wks. Although they work great to stuff pocket dipes with.
I used swaddlebees as my pockets last time I loved the trimness of them. I do like the fuzzibunz this time but they are still really bulky.
I would get a fleece or wool cover for overnight. This will prevent leaks. I might get a couple bamboo fitteds for overnight as well.

The prefolds are infant size so maybe 2 dozen regular size is what I should buy then?? Any good recommendations for fleece and wool covers?? We're in Texas and it gets really hot but that shouldn't be too much of an issue should it?? Thanks so much for the advice, I'm hoping to complete my stash by the end of the week .

I would definitely get 2 dozen regular PFs.. and maybe some more fitteds and a few pockets. The pockets are nice for when you are out and about or if you leave her with a family member for a little while. I like them for middle of the night diaper changes too (those or fitteds) they just seem easier when I am half asleep!!

Might want to get some more fitteds or a pocket or two. Prefolds are a nice cheap way to round out your stash, but they're not my #1 fave esp for the runny poop phase. I always still get 2 dozen or so though.

I agree with Talulah Farie. EBF poo is crazy. I liked having fitteds to contain it better!
More fitteds.

More newborn covers.

More wipes.

More sized AIOs or pockets in newborn or small. The bG! will be huge on a newborn.

my DD fit in infant pf's for a loooong time. They fit until about 15lbs. At 11m DD is only 16lbs. Once we learned to fold & snappi well we loved pf's for containing runny poo.

It looks like you have a good stash going. I'd probably get a doz more infant pf's & a couple thirsies xs b/c they are in between nb & sm bummis. I'd also get a lot more wipes. We use them for everything from diaperchanges, little spit ups, eye boogies, & nose boogies.

for wool I really like loveybums crepe covers, swaddlebees snap, & Luxe pull ons

I think it looks good. I prefer Fuzzi Bunz to bumGenius, I think they fit better - they're a little longer up the front and back, which helps them not slide down the butt.

I would get a few diaper pins just to have on hand - just in case you don't like the snappi and want something to compare it to. I really like pins. I was really scared of them at first, but now I really love the snug fit I can get with a pin.

I've been using almost solely prefolds for the first 4 months of my DD's life, and there is a learning curve in containing the breastmilk poo, but overall I much prefer prefolds to fitteds. Prefolds are more absorbent, less binding on baby, easier to clean, and easier to change (you can use a corner of the prefold to wipe most of the poo off, then there's not much left to actually wipe with a wipe - this is harder to do with a fitted).

In my opinion, I'd hold off on buying more fitteds. You have 6 kissaluvs, and with a newborn you'll likely be washing diapers every other day or at most every two days, so I think 6 is enough for the first few weeks just to determine whether you really think you need more or whether the prefolds are working for you. We had 3 nb kissaluvs, and we barely used them. Right now I have 1 fitted. Every time I try a new fitted, it just never works as well as my good ol' prefolds, so I end up trading it or giving it away. It makes sense in my head that a fitted would be better, but I have yet to find one that doesn't make me want to reach for a prefold instead.

Fitteds are also so much pricier, that if it were me, I'd stick with the 6 kisssaluvs and wait to see how the prefolds work out.

No matter what you will definitely need more nb covers. My bare minimum for the newborn stage would be 4 wrap covers and 2 wool or fleece soakers for nighttime. For wool, we use aristocrat. I love them but they are pricey, and I've never tried anything else so there could be something just as good for less money. One option that I would do if I had to do it over again would be to buy a few cheap recycled sweater wool soakers for the newborn stage b/c cleaning poop off a wool cover is no fun. It would have been nice to have a few "throw around" wool covers that maybe won't last as long as the aristocrat but that I could throw in the wash without caring so much about them getting ruined.

whew what a ramble, sorry! Normally I would go back and edit so it's shorter but I'm too tired today good luck and congrats - I think the CDing makes the baby experience so much more fun. I'm 4 months in, and while I'm now really comfortable with CDs (and able to be confident enough to give advice!), the learning curve was a bit steep, and for a while (I'd say 2-3 months) I was a little overwhelmed at all of the different ways to do things and kept second-guessing everything I was doing. Just like parenting I guess, eventually you get to a point where you settle into your routine, and once you're there, at least for me, I just can't imagine ever going back to the boring, plastic-y, blah world of disposables.

Oh, and the Green Mountain Diapers orange-edge prefolds (newborn size) were PERFECT, and I now use them as inserts, for which again they are PERFECT. I had 2 dozen nb prefolds, and that seemed to be enough, though another 12 probably wouldn't have hurt either.

Thanks for the tip! I was considering those!

To the OP: I think a good solid stash is like 24 fitteds, 24 prefolds, 7 covers (more if you are using wool only...you'd be surprised how fast those wool covers all get dirty and then you're stuck with no covers for a day while they all dry askmehowiknow), and 48 wipes (the more the better). Throw in a pocket/aio or three for outings and you're good to go.

I think it depends on the baby for containing the runny poo with prefolds. Cause I am an expert snappi-er and I used every fold known to man, and they still leaked at least once a day. Only onto the inside of the cover, though, and if you get the PUL wrap covers they're easy to just throw in the wash. At the time I was using wool and it was obnoxious to me. I can't afford an all-fitteds stash (or I probably would!), but in those early early days I do prefer them definitely. After like the first two or so months the poo is less runny I noticed.
I also didn't like pins and could never get a snug fit with them. I don't know how people do that. Years of diapering and I still never figured it out.

Ultimately though, everyone is going to have their own experience with cloth diapering, and it won't even be the same from baby to baby. You just have to get a bunch of different things and see what works best for you. Personally, my newborns would burn through 6 fitteds in half a day, and then I'd be stuck with the leaky prefolds, and I'd be bummed. Minimum number for fitteds (or even a combo of fitteds and pockets/AIOs) would be 12, imo.

is this your forever shtash or just your newborn stash?

I would get some premi prefolds if your going to diaper from day 1 and some more infant prefolds, we used the infant size untill dd was like 21 months. I would also get some imse vimse covers (they are really gentle and are the only ones that didnt leave marks on dds theigh, but they run pretty big so choose the smaller size) and i would get some wool soakers (we are in texas too, and they are not hot at all) for night time.

More snappies! They always disapear, and you can never find them when you need them! LOL!

You could get a set of gdiapers and use your prefolds in them if you want to add something extra. And i would do Fuzzi Bunz over BG anyday. Also you might want a few more fitteds (thirstes are good but they are synthetic fibers so they can have stink issues. Under the Nile ones are great, and all organic cotton. Or you could always get some prefitteds made.

Oh and you might want to get some fleece of silk liners for the early days, aswell as a couple of doublers.

Best of luck! Welcome to your new addiction! LOL!

UTN fitteds are huge, though. They didn't fit either of my (average to medium sized) kids until about 3+ months old. And the size small still fits my average sized 3 year old.

Still a great diaper though! The only drawback to those is that they take awhile to dry, but that's only becuase they are SUPERTHICK. Nothin' gets through those suckers.

Yup, swaddlebees fitteds are some of my fav too. They have a more bikini cut fit which worked well for my skinny petite dd.

This is just my newborn starter stash though I'll definitely buy several diapers that'll last a while. I think I'm going to go ahead and get another dozen infant prefolds and then also some regular sized ones. I'm going to get several more covers (maybe a few Thirsties and then also look into wool and fleece). A couple of Fuzzi Bunz and a couple of more fitteds (maybe for nighttime??). Then I can gauge after a few weeks what seems to work better for us and go from there.

If its just your newborn i would not get any regular sized ones. They are HUGE! dd is 2 and 26 lbs and they are still way too bulky and long to use on her.

If you get some premi ones, you can always use them as doubler when they get bigger, or for pads for you. And they are great as clean up towels.

Thanks . I figured they'd be of multiple use so you can never have too many right lol. Any recommendations for good wool or fleece covers??

I agree with this. You need infant prefolds, MAYBE preemie but definitely not regular. The regular ones are HUGE. They fit my toddlers! and those little prefolds work great for clean up rags.

For an example, this is my small to average sized four month old in a regular prefold. I believe she was about 14 lbs there. You can see that it's pretty bulky on her, I can't even imagine that on a teeny baby.
