okay, so not only does my 10 month old ds only have his thumb lunulas-he's got mee's lines on all fingernails! which apparently means arsenic poisoning????

i'm a little confused-how would he get arsenic poisoning? and then i continued to research and found that could possibly mean kidney issues. so anyone got mee's lines??

I don't know the difference betwen mee's lines for arsenic and I think there are different white marks/lines for zinc deficiency. I mean--arsenic is definitely out there, but zinc deficiency is also pretty common.

I wrote it on the allergy's chat thread but forgot to write it here. I did the fingernail painting booth at a nursery school fair on Saturday for 4 hours (mostly kids under age 7). I was checking out everyone's lunulas! And there were 4 or 5 kids with white spots on their nails but I couldn't remember what they meant. It was actually fascinating. How come nail technicians don't know this stuff and tell you what you need or what's wrong with you?

well, my ds definitely has mee's lines as opposed to zinc deficiency lines. i think they are even on his toes.

and after researching a little more it could mean any heavy metal poisoning....and there is a possibility we were exposed to mercury around christmas-we'll never know for sure though. argh-i thought the worrying was over about this mercury crap, and no doctor seems to know anything about it as far as detection or treatment....

bummer.

I remember, you asked about that, didn't you? I felt bad that I didn't have a more definitive answer, my background is chronic exposure, not acute.

A hair test at this point may be helpful, it could show high levels of excretion(depends on how fast your LO's hair grows, but you want the part closest to the scalp).

yes, i did ask about that a while ago and i think i will speak to our chiro and doctor about a hair test. i just hate the unknown because i read somewhere that it can take up to 6 months after the exposure to show any negative effect which will end up being in june...thanks for the advice though

I'm happy to report that my right index lunula is definitely making an appearance :

And is it just me or do the images in that first link I posted seem out of sync? It seems like they're shifted up one - so look at the description of image 2 but the picture for image 1? Only it doesn't start till somewhere around image 12-15ish?

Missing Moons

So I found this thread searching for the missing 1/2 moons on my fingers. I have only the ones on my thumbs. My concern is looking at my 5 year olds hands - she doesn't have them either. I know I used to have them. I am also 6 months pregnant ... my hemoglobin was just checked and was an 11. I am wondering if I should be supplementing with something besides my prenatals. I am concerned for my daughter ... any diet ideas? I am going to do some blackstrap molasses with her, fortified oatmeal. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also have Hashimoto's and worry about my daughter as well. She had allergies as a baby, we treated with diet and probiotics. Thanks for any tips!

Have you checked out the Thyroid Thread? There are nutrient deficiencies involved in hypothyroidism, and part of it is that hypothyroid people don't convert beta carotene into vitamin A. My issue, one of my issues anyway, my son was pretty darn low. There's other nutrient stuff too, various minerals. I think my lack of lunulae is vitamin A related. My kids have the same vitamin and mineral deficiencies I do, for me that was helpful in understanding what's going on. The other thread has a lot more discussion on that.

Thanks ... off to check out the thyroid thread!!!
