Appointing new godparents

Can we really do this or does something need to happen through the Catholic church? When DS was baptized at 4 months old, we chose close friends of whom had just had a DS themselves - certainly thought we were all going to be friends for life. Well, for various reasons, that didn't happen and the relationship between myself and the godmother went south, she wanted nothing to do with myself, my H or my DS and therefore, H and I decided that we needed to appoint another couple - someone that would really understand and care about their responsibilities as a godparent.

So we asked the new couple, they happily accepted, :, but now I'm wondering if something needs to be taken care of through the Catholic church. Does anyone know?

TIA.

From what others have reported in similar threads recently, you can't change the official records kept at the church your DS was baptized at, but you can certainly "appoint" new folks to the duties of godparents.

Someone had actually called the church and asked to have the records changed, but were told that couldn't be done.

You can't have the "official" records on file changed, but of course YOU can appoint new godparents.
