Anyone Else Dislike Throwdown with Bobby Flay on the Food Network?

I don’t like it. I find it mean spirited.

Has anyone else seen this show? The basic premise is that an unknown but talented chef or home cook who is well-known for particular dish is asked to come on the Food Network because of their particular expertise in a particular dish. They are filmed talking about their particular dish and the show culminates in a party where the unsuspecting person shows off their cooking in front of their friends and family. That’s when Bobby Flay shows up unannounced to challenge them to a cook off right then and there. I don’t like the manipulation and the deceit. The person is led to believe they have this great moment in the sun to talk about their dish and in comes Bobby Flay to steal their under and make sure it’s all about his cooking show.
I don’t know how this is entertaining. Yeah, a couple of times he has lost but I've seen some really nice people lose to him and I feel bad for them losing in front of their loved ones. I think most of them try to be good sports about it because what other choice have they got. It’s not even a level playing field for the other person. Flay comes with his team of two other professional chefs. He spends like a week at the Food Network test kitchen preparing his version of the other’s person’s dish. He comes with the best ingredients etc. The other person is caught completely off guard in front of an audience and has to on the spot enter into a competition with Flay.

It’s just sad to watch. Last night the poor lady who was known for making a great pie lost to Flay and I won’t forget her comment to Flay, “Way to ruin a business, Bobby.” Ugh!

I can't stand this show. Mean-spirited, yeah.

Although, I liked it the time the woman with the New Orleans gumbo beat him. She made REAL gumbo, he made some kind of new-age goulash.

I've only seen the show a few times, but this was the exact impression I came away with every time. Every episode feels like he's the big, popular bully picking on some sweet little guy. I actually liked Bobby Flay before this series, but I've lost a lot of respect for him.

Honestly, I'm really upset with the whole "reality show" lineup Food Network has turned to. Food Network prime time used to be Emeril and Rachel Ray actually COOKING. Now it's Ace of Cakes, Throwdown, Next Food Network Star, Diners Drive-ins and Dives, the guy who takes the "rough kids" and teaches them to cook. I hate it.

Wow I love this show. We have it auto set on the DVR. These businesses get tons of publicity, hardly a way to ruin a business. He is an iron chef after all. Plus, they dont have to participate ya know.

Most of the eppys are total fun, but there are a couple that missed the mark.

We hate it too, but then we don't like Bobby Flay. I could almost grasp it if not for the week of preperation and extra help. It is just sooooo dumb to act like it's an equal playing field because after all, it is the other cook's speciality.

I don't like it either. You tell a chef that are going to be showcased for their talents and then take it back? That's just mean. I don't like Flay anyway.

Me too. I used to like watching the Food Network but not anymore. I can hardly find a show to watch on that network. I think they're appealing to the male demographic in the 20-50 year range so that's why there are so many contests, throwdowns, food entertainment shows.

I think its funny when Bobby wins, he looks mortified.

Mean spirited and pompus. I'm so cool, I'm going to come in and show everyone I'm better than you at what you do for a living. Obnoxious.

I hate Bobby Flay.

I sort of like it. The people on it, or at least that I've seen, typically seem to have a good time, no one is pretending that if Bobby wins the other contestant's status as a local cooking legend is somehow a sham, he pretty often doesn't win and doesn't take losing badly so it's not like it's really some big "I can cook anything better than anyone" ego-fest, and it has definitely shown off some cooks who realistically would not get as much attention from a little space-filler special.

As an aside, I bought Bove's Cafe jarred pasta sauce explicitly because when they were featured on Throwdown their food looked So. Awesome. And I'm pretty sure Flay won that one.

I like it too (even bought season 1 on DVD).

I actually like this show. I think I only like it because he loses the vast majority of the time. I feel SO BAD for the local person when Bobby wins because I feel like it's such a smack in the face to someone who has spent years perfecting their dish.

But since he's lost in 80% or so of the ones I've seen I still like it. The only person who seemed upset by the challenge was the donut guy. Man, was that guy a jerk! I didn't like him at all.
