Question about peeing

Thread Starter
I have an intact 11 month old. Every time we go to the ped the ped asks if he has a strong spray--like when he is changed and pees does it hit the wall, etc....
I can recall this happening at the beginning but not so much now...the one or two times I can remember there being peeing during a change it wasn't "strong" it just sort of went all over his clothes or legs, etc.

Should I worry?

I don't think I would worry about it. I don't think it has to be all that strong.

Your doctor is imagining problems that are highly unlikely to be an issue. He probably fears for the dreaded (sarcasm) phimosis, i.e. that his penis will be strangled by his own foreskin and close off the opening so he can't pee (more sarcasm). This is just not going to happen!!! (Read the article on the "phony phimosis" diagnosis at: http://www.cirp.org/library/normal/)

Unless urine comes out only in drops, or he really has to strain to get it out, I wouldn't worry about it. As the foreskin gradually loosens you may get some variations in how the urine looks coming out, sometimes it can literally spray, sometimes the foreskin may balloon with urine before it flows out, etc.

Read also Paul Fleiss's excellent article "Protect Your Uncircumcised Son." This is a must-read for all parents of intact boys, and will put your mind at ease about a lot of normal variations that doctors will sometimes tell you are problems, but really aren't.

As long as it comes out there is nothing to worry about. Some boys strain when they urinate and it isnt a issue.

Like pp said the Dr. is looking for problems.

DS is potty learnig, so I get to see him pee often .

Sometimes when he pees it comes out in a very strong stream. Mostly this happens when he has just woken up, or after he's been drinking a juice box in the car and then dozes off.

Other times he barely dribbles. Such as when I need to use the bathroom at the mall and I put him on it too just b/c we are there.

I'm guessing that you experience a similar variation. When you first get up or drank a whole bottle of iced tea, you have a very full bladder and the pee comes out hard and fast. Other times, you just happen to be in the bathroom and figure you'll use it since you happen to be there, and you just pee lightly.

If your DS never seems to pee hard, then I would make sure he is getting enough water and is not dehydrated.

My son clears several feet and makes a nice balloon when he has a lot of urine other times it is less strong and there is not as much of a balloon. This is NOT a problem. Now if your son only squeezes a few drops out and strains hard, that would be a sign of a problem.

Your doc seems to be very unfamiliar with the intact boy. You should be very careful that the doc does not try to manipulate your son's foreskin. Remind him not to touch his penis BEFORE the diaper comes off. You also might want to take some time to educate him.
